Hektor

The negative reviews astound me as HEKTOR is completely distinct from the many other horror games I've played and I loved every minute of it. There are familiar horror elements, especially those drawn from Frictional Games' Amnesia, but Hektor nonetheless practices innovative and engaging storytelling complimented by an excellent procedurally generated environment that makes the game feel unpredictable. The sound design, especially the beautiful original score, is another stellar aspect of this game. By all means, horror fans should give Hektor a chance.

Project Night

Playing Project Night is like watching a horror movie with no budget: you should forgive its technical shortcomings and appreciate all of the creativity and imagination that went into it. Everyone can agree the monsters in this game are inept and foolish, they are the game's biggest problem and can be hard to look past. If you can look past them however, Project Night delivers an intriguing and mysterious story and tells it quite well. The style of the game is heavily inspired by old PS1 games, namely Silent Hill. The atmosphere tends to be strong, lots of atmospheric sound effects like whistling winds are used which add a lot to the experience. The gameplay is also very good with lots of exploration and puzzle solving. Overall Project Night is great for being made with no budget, just look past the stupid monsters and you'll be in for a fun time.

Amnesia: Justine

Justine has great pacing, better puzzles than The Dark Descent, and solid level design. The voice acting is very good, once again. The only real flaw with Justine is that the Suitors make no sense. They are malnourished, mutilated men that can kill you (and break down a 6 inch thick door at one point) by hitting you. Would it really have been too hard to make them hold an axe or something? Oh well, all things considered Justine is an amazing expansion pack well worthy of the Amnesia title. This little 40 minute game blows Machine for Pigs out of the water, by the way.

Year Walk is incredibly original. The storyline is very interesting, the art design is wonderful, the OST is haunting and beautiful, and the gameplay is solid. Year Walk is a great entry in the horror genre.

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee

As a Godzilla fanatic, I was looking forward to this game quite a bit. The multiplayer mode is solid, fun, and good for parties. So, why does this get a 1/10? The Adventure mode, which is damn near essential to beat in order to have fun with multiplayer (due to unlocking new characters) is godawful. Incredibly unfair, rage-inducing, and terribly designed, the Adventure mode is from hell. I'm fine with hard games; hell, I play them all the time (Zelda 2: The Adventure Of Link and Castlevania Dracula X for instance) but this is 100% unfair. Don't touch this Godzilla-sized turd.

Truly a masterpiece in horror gaming, Overture is full of quality atmosphere and genuine emotion. While Black Plague is better, Overture is a great first Penumbra game and deserves to live on.

An amazing atmosphere for an indie game, with solid gameplay and beautiful sound design. Honestly, it's one of the finest horror games of all time. Note the PC/Mac version is much better than the iOS edition.

Different, yes, but still a damn fine game. Easily more disturbing than the first game, and the gameplay operates well. And holy f*ck, the manpigs... It's easy to become immersed in this game, and I admit I don't mind the lack of oil, tinderboxes and sanity being gone. Overall, it is excellent. I love it.

Duke Nukem 2

Duke Nukem 2 may be an improvement over it's predecessor, but the broken save feature and overly repetitive gameplay leave more to be desired. To its credit, it gives us decent graphics and sound as well as being good enough to play a few levels in a row.
