It’s been a year, and I’m still underwhelmed. We can expect to get more cars drip fed via DLC, but the game core hasn’t changed. The FIA championship (aka the crown jewel) is still geared for the elite, but the vast majority of participants can expect to simply fill the grids. If you’re not into eSports then you can just bypass this mode. And if you’re looking for tracks, this game has you covered witha selection of the most banal cookie cutter race tracks from around the world. Still haven’t bothered with photomode or the livery editor, which are a hefty potion of the game. I’d rather drive than create tacky paint jobs and take pictures of them. The offline campaign is not a campaign but simply individual racing series. Some fun can be had, but there’s nothing to work toward other than grinding for credits. Incidentally you’ll need to farm lots of credits for many of the obscenely priced cars. And if you already worked to obtain them in GT6 it’s all a waste of time unless it’s for bragging rights or (you guessed it) to take pictures or paint them. Arcade mode is where I finds myself gravitating, creating my own races from the ample settings and options. It takes someone with a thick skin and the patience of a saint to deal with the online racing. The sounds are vastly improved from past games, and the graphics are always the best in the business, but I need more than just a pretty face to remain engaged.

Fun game with many different racing disciplines in various somewhat fictional areas around the world. The wheel controls can take some time to dial in to your tastes, but once you do the experience is very good. Car selection is also very good though many iconic brands are missing. Still, there’s enough cars to keep you busy. The Rally stage generator is also very good. The career mode is a little mystifying, your path to world domination is unclear, and the AI times are a little puzzling, but these are not game breaking in my opinion.

As a primarily offline gamer everything I wanted but didn’t get in GTSport can be found in Project Cars 2. Dynamic all-season weather, dynamic time of day, cars I can enjoy without having to grind credits for, an engaging career mode, flexible control and FOV options, advanced car tuning, multi-class racing, a plethora of tracks, fully customizable events with practice and qualifying sessions, a REAL Rallycross mode and some excellent DLC. Replays and photo mode are adequate, but I’d rather race than take pictures of custom paint jobs. Confirmed Project Cars convert.

This game is not for everyone. You have to have an open mind and patience for which is mostly uncommon in gamers. If you’re looking for a crash and burn racer, bump and pass competition, and/or details you can inspect under a microscope down to the last rivet, then Gran Turismo Sport, Forza, and Horizon are waiting for you. This game is not perfect but the developers have a passion for what they do and it shows.

This game has one unfortunate distinction; it followed the immensely popular DiRT Rally. DiRT 4 however has lasting gameplay with three different disciplines and a stage generator which seems to get blasted by a lot of reviewers. You can either race the same stages over and over until you memorize them, or you can get new stages every time. Yes, corners start to look the same after a while, but nothing beats evening the playing field when you’re up against someone that’s played DiRT Rally for 1000 hours. In the end, this game is my favorite and most played on PS4.
