A very good twin-stick shooter with an absolutely mind-blowing audio/visual presentation. It's also quite hard, even on its lowest setting. However, I personally think it might be worth learning to play these kinds of games on one that's this good just because it's so enjoyable an experience.

One of the best city builders I've played. Since many things are randomized, such as which buildings you'll have access to and what resources are available, every town turns out differently. The crafting recipes can take several inputs, and many buildings make the same things at different efficiencies. So players can't set up a strategy that will win every game. There are always new problems to solve. Definitely recommended.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide8

I waited to play this until after the recent major overhaul of classes. I am really having fun with this game. Its implementation of first person melee combat is top notch. The guns feel good to shoot. The transitions from ranged to melee combat are really well-done. The atmospherics: the writing, voicing, music, backgrounds... these are all solid. My reading of the situation is that this game was released in an incomplete state, and now that they've had time to get things cleaned up, it's a very good game. Many other reviews compare this to L4D, and I think this is a far better game than L4D.

Dead Space8

I really did not like Dead Space when I played it on the PS3. Something about the dismemberment mechanic seemed gimmicky to me, and I did not enjoy it. Fast-forward to the remake, and I gave it another shot. For some reason, it hit this time. Maybe it was using mouse/keyboard on PC, or any of the QOL improvements the new version got. It's not a perfect game, with me getting the quest system stuck several times by doing things i wasn't supposed to, the dynamic loot spawner makes it questionable about what happens when you buy ammo, etc. But I am generally not a fan of AAA games and their stories, but this one was good. The writing was even decent, which is amazing.

This is Game of the Year 2022. Everything about this game is solid. But the controls are amazing. It's not because I've been a gameplay programmer and designer for 20 years that I think I'm right. But that experience is why I think the immense attention to detail in the controls are so amazing.

This is the "sequel" to the awesome Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars from the PS3 in 2008. SARPBC was the best game that came out that year (I am fully aware that GTA IV came out in 2008). I put "sequel" in quotes, because it's largely the same game with new trimmings. However, that is not an insult. It means that Psyonix know how good their game is, and not to break something that's already gameplay perfection. It is hard (or impossible) to overstate how much fun this game is, because you get no assistance from the computer. Everything you get in this game is earned through skill. Lucky shots exist, but you'll find that the only way to perform consistently is to master control of your car and collisions with the ball. There are only minor differences between the myriad cars you see in the screenshots, so everything comes down to player skill, not choice of car. "Play balance" isn't something we have to worry about here. After over 300 hours with this title, I can say they have done the original game great justice, and created something that will last for many years to come. It only gets to be more fun as you get better at it.

Pandemic: The Board Game10

Full disclosure: I'm one of the developers of this app. However, having played this game probably over 300 times, I can really say that it is a top-notch app. The workflow is smooth, needed information is easily accessible, and the interface is really nice. Most things in it fade in/out or grow/shrink when appearing/disappearing. The undo system works flawlessly, and the save-game system is completely invisible. With the coming update (the first bit of On the Brink expansion content), several small issues are getting a cleanup, so it will be even better than before. As far as iPad boardgame adaptations go, this is as good as they get.

I played the original a lot. It was fun, had some interesting play mechanics, a certain charm to the graphics, odd sound effects, and great music. The "Deluxe" edition is missing most of these things. This game only has passing similarity to the original in the most important department, and that is feel. It just doesn't feel fun to play. The original is still more fun, even though it is nearing 30 years of age. My review score isn't lower because the game at least functions. See Assault Rigs for the kind of game I would give a zero.

This game is excellent. The single-player campaign is fun. The art is great; the stunning vastness of buildings in the W40k universe is well-realized. The multiplayer is fun and complex. It's not a perfect game, but it is well worth the purchase.

One of the finest games on the PSN. Fun, accessible, and with long-term skill-learning possibilities. You can play this for months and still continue to hone and learn new techniques. Sure, it doesn't have the slickest presentation, or the greatest graphics. But in the gameplay department, it is rock solid.

Great zombie game. Attention to detail is incredible, and the lighting effects are amazing. Sure it's top-down, but it's very intense and involving. My wife loves playing this co-op. You don't get enough money to upgrade everything, so you have to choose. Best implementation and use of a flashlight mechanic I've ever seen.
