Avengers: Endgame8

Epic, sentimental and some times a bit messy. It’s unbelievable how many story lines and humorous and touching titbits the Russo Brothers manage to juggle. The final instalment of the Avengers franchise is a joy to watch if you’re invested in the previous films. As a standalone film it’s not as great as Infinity War and in some ways it replays some of it plot points. Still a great and satisfying ending to a grand story.

Did we really need a reboot of Hellboy? Not as bad as people make it out to be, but not excellent either.

A hypnotic almost spiritual doc, that feels like a marriage between 2001 a Space Odyssey and a Werner Herzog documentary. Riveting, unsettling and joyous at the same time. A real gem.

Simplistic but highly enjoyable. The movie plays like a best off Queen’s greatest hits and achievements, which isn’t a bad thing. The music still has the power to sway any audience and Freddie’s commanding stage presence is excellently recreated by an outstanding performance by Rami Malek. Freddie’s band mates are equally well portrayed, albeit a bit of the card board variety. Brian May is the other stand out, every detail and nuance of his mannerisms has been captured, one could easily be fooled he was the real person. To me the biggest let down was the watered down story. It was competent but without any rough edges. Nothing that ruffles the feathers. It’s a tribute to Queen and a very entertaining one at that.

Alfonso Cuarón created a cinema masterpiece with Roma. Beautifully directed, excellent performances and cinematography. Cuarón balances nostalgia and sentiment just right without things getting overbearing but still gripping you. It’s a shame not more movies like this reach cinemas. In a world saturated by superhero movies and kid stuff one can only reminisce the good old times when cinema was truly in the hands of daring filmmakers with a vision. What does it say of our current movie going culture that everything is, so dumbed down?

Captain Marvel7

Not the best, not the worst in the Marvel lineup. Brie Larson pulls **** super hero, and is very likeable. Sam Jackson is always entertaining, although the de-aging process was a bit unreal. To me the pacing was a little bit off and the humor could be better balanced. Still Captain Marvel feels a bit by the numbers albeit still very entertaining. If this movie was released before the bar was set by Iron Man I would probably rate it higher.

To be honest I really didn’t understand the story or motivations of the characters. Did it matter, no. The cheer love of all things 70’s and 80’s, the style, vibe, music and visuals made up for it. It’s more an experience than a solid movie in that sense. Is it a good movie? Not really. But who doesn’t geek out of seeing a dual chainsaw fight with Nic Cage? It is inspired filmmaking that makes this movie worth seeing. Next time I hope a better script is involved.

Venom4

Subpar writing and directing and some confusing editing. Even the special effects weren’t all that great. Did anyone at the studio care at all? I was very disappointed with a movie I was looking forward to as Venom has always been one of the interesting comic book characters. The only thing that saves this movie is a few well timed jokes and the performance of, the always excellent, Tom Hardy.

A wonderful example of how horror movies can be a vehicle for social commentary. With US director Jordan Peel has tapped into our anxiety for the other. Be it aliens from across the border or some other unknown phantom threat. The movie is like a mirror and makes us look at our selves. We are our own worst enemy. So far so good. What bogs the film down a bit is the complexity of plot details to make it al work as one coherent story. It’s still good but I preferred the more minimalistic approach Peel utilized in his previous film Get Out. Here the details are some times confusing, however these are small blemishes on a otherwise creative and smart take on the slasher genre.
