Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning3

I was looking forward to this game after all the previews left me expecting an RPG heavyweight. Maybe if you are a 10 year old who has never played an RPG before, you might get some enjoyment out of it, But anyone older has to give it a miss or be very pissed off at completely throwing away their money. The way the previews and yes, even some reviews, have given the impression it was a classic RPG aimed at adults, are not only misleading but downright dishonest! This is STRICTLY kiddies stuff. It would be overpriced at a fiver too so how it can justify a full price release I do not know. The graphics are very, very poor and to say they are console graphics, like many reviews have come out and said, are an insult to the latest consoles. You could maybe say that if your console is a Sega Megadrive I suppose! With the likes of Skyrim around, this should have been scrapped as soon as the publishers got a glimpse at the Skyrim gameplay footage. If you are looking for a third person action RPG in this type of mould, The Witcher does everything this tries to do in a much more adult, entertaining and deeper way. Divinity 2 is also a much better bet. I feel extremely misled by the previews for this game that included interviews with the developers (who must have all been on LSD or similar hallucinogenics) that had me expecting something special. One of the biggest let downs of recent years. Very, very disappointing.

Football Manager 20128
Apr 5, 2012
The latest in this long running series is the best yet. All the things that previously put me off playing previous titles for any significant time, have now been rectified and this is the most complete experience of the series so far. The detail in this game is mind boggling and will be too much for some. However, this can be alleviated to a degree with the ability to offset aspects of the game you don't like to the control of the assistant manager, who will also give you advice throughout the game. Online help is extensive and context sensitive, making the game's complexity much easier to get to grips with. Pretty much everything in the game has been improved in the latest version and it's last major update. The array of different tactics plus the ability to design your own gives you almost infinite possibilities to get your team playing exactly how you want. The setpiece designer is also well thought out and easy to use. You also get chance to praise or criticise your team at half time with the ability to single out individuals and give them the famous Alex Ferguson style 'hair dryer' treatment so that they know in no uncertain terms that you are far from happy with their performance! You can even yell instructions from the sidelines during the game as well as change tactics on the fly. You can give your opinions to the press after the game as they grill you on the performance levels of your team and things you say to the press can be picked up on by your players with the possibility of upsetting some of them with your comments. Negotiating contracts and transfers brings you into contact with player's agents as they try and demand as much as they can for their clients and themselves and you can bring players into your office for a private word or two. Pretty much everything a real football manager does can be done in the game. The only disappointment is the sound - there isn't any! Apart from a few rudimentary sound effects during the match sequences, the game is played in total silence. Maybe a little music would be nice. The Match Of The Day theme or the ITV Champions League music would have added extra atmosphere and would be far preferable to silence. Individual teams 'theme songs' such as 'Marching On Together for Leeds, 'Blue Is The Colour' for Chelsea, etc would also have been a nice touch and could be an idea for future versions? The graphics during the match sequences are pretty basic and not up to the level of the arcade football titles like FIFA and Pro Evolution. Otherwise this game comes highly recommended, A football fan's wet dream!

Sid Meier's Civilization V8
Apr 5, 2012
The latest incarnation of the all time PC classic is the best yet. This latest version has changed to a hex based system and combat has been completely overhauled, making it much more tactical. After the disappointing Civ 4, this is a welcome return to form for the series and the turn based 'just one more go' gameplay is more addictive than ever. This version has integrated modding built into the interface and allows mods to be selected and loaded in-game very easily, giving it infinite replay value. Multiplayer implementation is now a much more viable proposition than in previous versions, making this the complete package. This game will take up many, many hours of your life and therefore comes wholeheartedly recommended.â

GRID (2008)4
Apr 5, 2012
GRID Average User Score: 7.6 User Score 4 Terrible controls and tedious track design ruin what could have been a classic racer. It tries to be a serious simulation but fails because of the poor handling of the cars. The 'feel' is just all wrong and the tracks are a chore rather than fun to play. It's frustrating because the graphics are superb and it has many elements that could have made it an excellent game. I don't know what the playtesters were on because the game's problems should have been picked up on and corrected. It's a game that makes you want to take a sledgehammer to your PC and it's a shame because it could have been up there with the best of the genre. Need For Speed Shift is a much better bet for this type of racer and I would advise going for that instead.â

I'm writing this as a warning for people not to waste their money thinking this is a game. It shouldn't be marketed or sold as a game. Steam don't give refunds (which is outrageous in my opinion. They wouldn't get away with it in any other industry) so don't waste your money. All you do is just wander around. There's nothing to do or any way to interact. Yes the graphics are fantastic and the music atmospheric but what's the point? I can't give this any score at all because it's just a graphic showcase. I can't think I've ever been so bored. Watch tv if you want something that you can only look at at and not interact with at all. Avoid at all costs because charging money for this is an outrageous rip off.

Arma II5

This could potentially have been a classic as it has many great ideas. However, it's one of the buggiest games I've ever played in over 30 years of computer gaming. However they had the nerve to release expansions for this game is shocking! They should have cleared up the AI issues and fixed their broken game first. Just one example (I could write a long, long list); When you try to call a helicopter to transport you to another location, you would think it could land in a large, empty car park without continually crashing into surrounding tress or buildings. Then when you do finally get it to land safely, your squad gets fatally injured when you order them to board it! The ambition of the game is admiral and there are loads of good ideas, but that is all negated by the bugs that make it unplayable. I bought this in a sale and I still feel ripped off! The worst case **** released in a wholly unfinished state I've ever seen! Ironically, if you are looking for a realistic squad based shooter, I would advise going for Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising or Operation Flashpoint Red River. Ironically because this is done by the team that did the original Operation Flashpoint but couldn't keep the name of that franchise because of the change of publisher.

Great litle puzzle game which combines simple ideas into something quite innovative and ingenious. It takes the age old sliding blocks puzzle and adds a few ideas of it's own to create a fun, addictive puzzler. It starts off easy but becomes something that will make your head hurt! Not the sort of thing you will play for hours on end, but is just right for a quick **** two. It's cheap price means you can't really go wrong. A game that will appeal even to people who don't normally play computer games, because it's something that anybody can just sit down and know how to play straight away.

Alter Ego (2010)6
Mar 30, 2012
Slow and pedantic adventure which isn't a good advert for the genre. A mundane story that never really seems to get going. The graphics are excellent but the same can't be said for the voice acting. It's dreadful and the only game I've ever come across where the voice acting is worse, is another adventure, Dead Mountaineer's Hotel (which is also the worst adventure I've ever played!). Although the graphics are beautifully drawn, the animation is awful. It's games like this that have made this genre almost obsolete. If you're patient, willing to persevere and can overlook these flaws, you can get some enjoyment from it. But it's hard work. For good examples of the genre, download Scumm and play some of the old Lucasarts classics for free. Or try something like Runaway: A Road Adventure, or Secret Files 2: Puitas Cordis (although the voice acting on the latter isn't brilliant - it's not as bad as Alter Ego's). If you are looking for something more up to date and darker, Amnesia is a good buy, but it's first person and not point and click.

King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame8

Deep and enthralling gameplay. Doesn't have the budget of the Total War games, but it still has gameplay to rival that series. It also brings role playing, magic and mythical units to the Total War style gameplay and these are skilfully used to enhance the gameplay experience by giving it more depth and originality. I bought the base game on special offer from Steam for Ã

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim9
Feb 1, 2012
This isn't only the best RPG I've ever played, it's one of the best games I've played per se! Bethesda have honed the gameplay since it's forerunner Oblivion and implemented loads of new ideas which have obviously been suggested by Oblivion players and fans of the series. Gameplay is riveting and eats away at your sleeping time; it's so hard to pull yourself away from, you won't want to go to bed! This game offers months of engrossing gameplay which is hard to fault. My only criticisms are cosmetic. It has console style graphics, although the PC version is much better to look at on high end machines. It would have been so much more stunning to look at if it had the graphics of something like Battlefield 3, but the graphics do still impress with it's weather effects like the snow as you get higher up mountains and in colder areas of the environment. The little touches like the rabbits, goats and other wildlife which run off as you and the various enemies approach them, really give the feel of a living and breathing world. Also, the characters faces, which are a big improvement over the ones seen in Oblivion, are still a long way off from those seen in the likes of LA Noir for example. Still, this is a must have game for anybody into video games and even if you don't normally like RPG's, this still won't fail to impress. A stunning achievement from Bethesda and I for one can't wait to see where they go from here. Although a sequel is a long way off, the DLC will be hotly anticipated and much sought after, as will the best of the many user made mods which have already started appearing. This game is an undoubted all time classic!

Excellent strategy game that promises to be an all time classic. The research that must have gone into this game is mind boggling. I've learnt more from this game than any other game I've played! Absorbing and unlike pretty much any other computer game. Original and brilliant.

Test Drive Unlimited 25
Aug 15, 2011
Could have been brilliant but significant flaws means it ends up incredibly frustratating. The appalling singleplayer driving tests that you are forced to endure in order to progress, are a shocking and unforgiveable experience that just leave you wanting to quit the game after a couple of attempts. Whoever was responsible in creating these tests should be sacked for ruining what could have been a classic game. The handling on a lot of the cars leaves a lot to be desired and all these problems contribute to ruining the overall experience. If you have the patience of a saint, you might be more willing to persevere but for most, this game will leave you wanting to take a hammer to your computer! A great shame because with just a bit more thorough playtesting, these faults could have been rectified.
