The quality of the game went down really badly in the past years and so did the number of players. The developers have added various game mechanics to make people spend more time playing yet these damage the quality of the gameplay (ex: challenges). They have sold on some occasions items (that affect gameplay a lot) exclusively for real money (which is like a nice slap in the face if you are a free to play user). The number of maps available in the matchmaker is rather low (you could also play custom battles but devs incentivise players to play in the matchmaker so much it's not even worth bothering with custom battles) so there's a severe lack of diversity in terms of gameplay. Battles are usually extremely unbalanced and it's just not fun. There's probably way more reasons for why the game went downhill but I can't be bothered to think of them all.
