This is a SERIOUSLY underrated movie. Yes, it's silly. Yes, it's a bit corny. But it's funny, and it has something to say, if it speaks to you. It ends so strong. Janine Garofalo in particular, has never been better. I don't know what to say - it's just fun.
True story, well-acted. Can't take too much away from it. I might have liked to see more exploration of the duality relating to how good this guy was at his job versus his criminal actions.
I don't understand the modern film trope of depicting warriors who are somehow so fearsome that their enemies can't even figure out how to draw a weapon, even when given 30 seconds to do so. Anyway, the movie is fast-paced, entertaining, and very very dumb.
I thought I was going to rate this movie very highly, right up to about 20 minutes before the end. The plot elements are a bit sensationalized and maybe not entirely accurate to the Catholic church, I wouldn't know, but there is some fine acting from the leads and I was engaged. I cannot view this movie outside of the context of the time it was made in, and I don't think what it has to say is smart.
Watchable - has a few genuine laughs, but not many. Basically it's fine for something to turn your brain off and enjoy John Cena being goofy, but really not much else good to be said about it.
The only movie I know that understands the topic of AI well enough to make a coherent statement about it. Disturbing and fascinating, Ex Machina uses familiar ideas to tell a story that is without the usual naively misapplied humanism that we've gotten so used to receiving from mainstream sci-fi like Star Trek.
Hard to review a movie that knows that it isn't good, and isn't trying... Nothing is plausible, nothing makes sense. It leads to the question "Why watch?" but of course the answer is big crazy monster fights! I will pick a couple of nits that I think should be better even in this kind of ridiculous campy movie. Firstly, when the monsters are alone with other monsters, suddenly they move like they're 6 feet tall. You keep forgetting they're supposed to be gigantic until the occasional visual effect of water or something reminds you. Secondly, the monsters are all, more than ever, just humans who can't speak English. They have complex thoughts and agendas and they communicate with each other either in monster talk or sign language. I don't need that. They can be animals.
Certainly entertaining. Had a definite John Wick vibe, but I didn't like John Wick at all. I'd say this movie makes a few strange choices that weaken some of its big moments, and a few scenes go on too long.... I guess its biggest strength is that I haven't really seen this kind of story in this kind of setting. Hopefully Patel can just go upward from here.
Certainly not as good as Napoleon Dynamite, but if you go knowing what you're gonna get, which you should if you've seen the earlier films, this still has plenty of laughs. Didn't deserve to get wrecked in the reviews like it did.
Wow, the cast on this movie! Jon Favreau knows how to make a quality film. It's a sweet movie with a lot of cool regional flavor. The only thing to take away from it is it's not gonna blow anyone's mind. It's a simple story, but an enjoyable one.
The critics of the time certainly got this totally wrong. It's not a sophisticated movie, and the actors aren't gonna win any Oscars, but it's just plain funny. The accusation that it has "one gag" are especially off-target, because there's something to make you crack a smile every 10 seconds. I can only assume the critics came in ready to be offended. It's a lot of fun with a lot of memorable jokes.
I enjoyed this movie. Ridiculous unbelievable comic book plot, but has some of the better superhero action sequences I've seen in a while, and manages to get in some real laughs and some genuinely touching emotional moments. SO long, though. I don't know why DC never cuts down their movies. Anyway, I think it's underrated.
You're not supposed to like this movie, but it's an old favorite of mine. I like Rodney Dangerfield and Jackée, and the cross-dressing kid is funny to me. It's not politically correct, but I don't care a whit about that. I suppose some think it's boring or unfunny, but I enjoyed it when I was young.
Plot doesn't make much sense, and unfortunately pretty boring. At least it's not the same exact plot as every other superhero movie. Had a few funny moments.
A stinker. I sometimes like movies like this, because I'm willing to put up with a silly plot to watch funny people be funny, but I just gave up on this one halfway through. I just couldn't relate to characters who were constantly thwarted and thrown by the most basic solvable problems. Not funny enough to make up for that.
Massively overrated. Nonsense science masquerading as deep thoughts for those that don't know any better. I don't know how else to explain that what you see in this movie is just silliness.
One of my favorite movies of all time. It's not "finely crafted" or "compelling", but it's incredibly fun. Just suspend some disbelief and enjoy the genius of Madeline Kahn and Tim Curry, and it's densely packed with little nuggets of awesome from the entire ensemble cast. Best if you love wordplay and corny gags. LOVE IT
I have always really liked this movie. The plot and the pacing are good. That being said, it's not going to blow you away. It's just not a prestige film. It's just good enough to be a lot of fun.
Thought this was one of those must-see classics from the 80s that I was too young to appreciate at the time, but watching now as an adult, I was just bored. Couldn't care enough to sit through the long uninteresting sequences.
A perfect movie, for anyone who is a fan of Star Trek and has a sense of humor. Surprisingly good performance by Tim Allen, and amazing performances by the rest of the cast. The stars aligned for this director, and the movie will have you rooting for the characters in spite of the impossibly goofy plot elements. It's a shame you won't be seeing it in the theater. Only thing that would have been better is if they had left the big swear word in. :-D
A perfect film. A compelling premise, good acting, good pacing. The movie is slow, but I never felt bored or disengaged. And no moralizing, just actions with consequences. No tidy bow to wrap it up.
Seems clear that this is not a "good" movie, but I found it to be watchable, but admittedly forgettable. I guess keep your expectations low and watch it if you want some lazy laughs.
Brilliant movie. Was never quite sure what I was watching, but loved the characters and the dialogue and the situations. Just a few scenes that fell flat for me, or felt like they were dragging the movie down to a lesser level, but really a hidden gem.
Hampered by some clumsy dialog and perhaps mediocre editing, I nevertheless giggled through this entire movie. There are a few really genius comedic moments. Casting is a bit surprising, but even though almost no one is perfect for the role they are in, it all works fabulously.
Disappointing because, for me, the movie starts out as a lot of fun. I expect and can forgive the "surprise! Here's everything you would have had to have known that I didn't tell you!" but the climax/resolution is long, painful and unfun.
One of the all-time most disappointing movies I've ever seen. There's a plot twist. I won't give it away, but it's extremely anti-climatic. It's all ambience and no substance. There's no explanation. It's grim and gross and unsatisfying. Me and my friends all agreed we should have walked out of the theater. It doesn't help that's it's billed as scifi, but really isn't.
This movie is mean-spirited and not fun. It's based on some trading cards, and so it has a kind of retro fun factor, but it's just one of those things where Hollywood is going "Isn't this SO cool?" and it's really just not.
