The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild9
Mar 6, 2017
Zelda Breath Of The Wild (BOTW) is a great game and a worthy entrant in the Zelda series. It seems like it's a new fresh idea but it's actually the opposite: it brings the game before the Ocarina of Time template and back to the idea of the very first game. Exploring here, there, digging up content and experimenting. PROS -Excellent, expansive world begging to explore and you'll probably spend much more time doing that then the main quest. -Dungeons and mechanics are great -Good art style -Oozes effort, care, and craft. Cons: -Believe the frame rate drop comments on other reviews, they are real, distracting, and at times - severe (disclosure: I only have the Wii U version). -Music is a disappointment which Zelda admittedly has set a very high bar (loss of the in-house melody is quite missed). In truth I think the game deserves an "8" but the technical issues become somewhat dulled with just how much FUN the game is and how much content you get. But don't believe all the hype - it isn't perfect, nor is it the best Zelda (for me Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are both superior).

Resident Evil 7: biohazard10

I am shocked to see 139 negatives (so far). This game is fantastic. Extremely creative it oozes "try" and "effort" but in the best possible ways. Every floorboard is detailed, every can rusted seemingly naturally - and thus washing away the old anti-RE complaints from a generation ago "but it's all pre-rendered!". I was disappointed with RE 4 and all subsequent games. They were not scary. They didn't cause fear, they were action games. This game is scary, immersive, and highly recommended.

World in Conflict: Soviet Assault10
May 8, 2016
It's quite simply the best, most fun single player PC game I've ever played. And extremely well recommended for anyone who likes action based RPS where you get right into it, Cold War thrillers, and wants a game that feels like a movie experience. The story and narrative are creative, voice-acting and cut-scenes are awesome. It's like experiencing a Cold War action flick (a well acted one, like Hunt For the Red October, coincidental since Alec Baldwin voices the main character). The action, though frantic and not realistic, is extremely well done and fun to play. It's even a bit dare I say emotional in parts. Because the action portrays the desperation of the characters well. There's nothing like taking a hill, then positioning heavy artillery on it. Linking your artillery to a hotkey and unleashing the rain. What doesn't get said enough is the detail. One of the Soviet Missions has you going through eastern Washington State farmland and having lived near there all my life they nail it. The brown, earth tones and yellow-dried grass fields. It's amazing how scalable the game is. One mission I was firing artillery from a high up "god's view" and then mouse wheeled close to an American tank and there was actually voice dialogue I could hear from inside the tank going "What's happening? Is that artillery?" Similar the Russian vehicles and men are constantly yelling out in battle what I can only assume is real Russian dialogue...Despite the fact that perhaps 95% of the game's audience may never understand it. Even in one of the Washington missions in the hayfields there's a sprinkler system, fully animated with the little arm that taps it in circles, with its own sound. The level of care and desire to make an awesome Cold War RTS is here. So again, if you like action games, RTS, Cold War movies and a great story experience you simply cannot go wrong with Soviet Assault.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water8
Feb 15, 2016
Fatal Frame is a good entry to the series but definitely not the best. Its presentation is excellent and after a creepy, but mostly uneventful first chapter the game really picks up. The graphics are great - perhaps pushing the Wii U's hardware. Character models especially are very well done. The music is ambient and environments creepy with some good jump scares.Combat works quite well with the Wii U controller and you'll probably find yourself like me: playing standing up and looking at the Wii U screen most of the time. There are negatives. For me it was lack of variety in enemies. While each chapter usually opens up new areas of the mountain, by my count there were only perhaps 11-13 enemies in the entire game. Battles quickly become repetitive. The story - granted designed by Japanese people and in reference to their culture - was difficult to follow. I'm not saying the story was bad, but it was hard for me to understand as a Canadian born and raised. I was also troubled by the final boss. I found it extraordinarily difficult and non-intuitive. In fact, I spent 90 minutes fighting it until my fingers hurt and I was out of film until per chance I moved my character around and got the hint on how to finish the thing. Perhaps my biggest issue with the game is that the ghosts you just see wandering around (who are creepy in and of themselves, even though you do not fight them) randomly disappear from the game about half-way through. Yep, all those classic moments with benign ghosts just **** if the developers got bored or ran out of time? I have played and own all Fatal Frames released in North America and this one is solidly in fourth place. I use "fourth" instead of last, because I still found it enjoyable and worth its money. The digital-only release will be a barrier for many Wii U owners who don't have the larger hard drive or do not wish to fill over half of it with one game. It was cheap to not release it on disc. Big issues have been made with the censorship, but I do not care for seeing a 15 year old Japanese female character dolled up in a bikini, so I won't object to said censorship. Summary: Recommended for Wii U fans looking for actual horror on the system, or Fatal Frame fans. But do not keep your expectations very high.

Trauma Team10
Feb 14, 2016
I honestly believe Trauma Team is one of the most underrated games of all time, at the very least its generation. The creativity, originality and fun of the medical drama sticks out amongst so many games that stick to traditional genres. The genius lies in being able to take control of six doctors who function very differently but also you get to chose how the story is told, at least the first half of the game. Each doctor has a different style keeping gameplay fresh, and their own unique story. Part of the aforementioned genius in telling the story is for the first part of the game you can jump around at will through the scenarios. Want to run through each doctor all at once and put together how the stories interact later? You can. Want to follow the traditional timeline jumping? You can. Want to just follow two at a time? You can. Some of the stories are really engrossing with good voice acting. The depressed and sardonic diagnostician was my favorite in both his personality, voice acting and scenario. But that was followed closely by forensics. Forensics had the underrated undercurrent of sexual tension between Kimoshima and "Little Guy" whom it seems they had a tryst. And while Little Guy DID grow up, Kimoshima sees him as immature and belittles him. I got invested in their interplay. My only issue with the game is I didn't really identify with Tamoe (endoscopy) or Hank (orthopedics). I especially liked Hank's surgeries, but his and Tomoe's stories and voice acting were a little on the "cheesy" side for me. But that may have been by design, in contrast to Kimoshima and Daniel Cunningham's more series and occasionally depressing story (Forensic's scenario mission #2 is legendary within the Trauma Team fan crowd for its emotional impact). I would call this game a must-buy off an auction or if this ever hits the Wii U marketplace. Anyone looking for something different, or dramatic, at least one doctor's play-style and story should appeal to you. P.S. The music is pretty good too. Again, Forensics and Diagnostics have the best tracks.
