Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition has made up for a lot of the missteps that were taken in Dragon Age II but still doesn't quite live up to Origins. The "hack 'n' slash" combat of Dragon Age II has been refined to put more emphasis on using your skills which I like. I still prefer the combat system of Origins were you needed to load attacks into a queue (the same as kotor) which put a great emphasis on chaining your skills together in the correct order, and when you did the results were often very satisfying. Some people consider Origins combat too slow and tedious which is fine, people are entitled to their opinions and honestly they're correct in saying it's slow and tedious, still prefer it though. Inquisitions combat system is a worthwhile compromise between Origins and DA2. The story is the most epic in scope in the Dragon Age series so far. You're leading a fight against almost everything in the DA universe. Your enemies include mages, templars, demons, darkspawn, assassins, the carta, dragons, a rebel army, the undead, various monsters, a would-be archdemon, a would-be god, poltical figures, and even grey wardens. The story and writing are great, living up to the expectations set by Origins for the most part. The side quests aren't as memorable as the ones in Origins but the main quest and companion quests are on par. The amount of side quests in this game is daunting, coupling that with the fact that the quests are not very memorable can make trying to 100% this game a chore but they do move you around the various locales promoting discovery and collecting lore. Graphically this game is nothing special. Slightly above average in my opinion. Bugs are present on the xbox one version. Frequent audio delays which occur mostly within the first few seconds of loading into an area, frequent texture pop-in, freezing happens occasionally but lasts only a second or two, bugged dialogues which require you to reload to get the dialogues working properly but this only happened to me once. A few critiques I have: Some of the war table operations take too long. Sometimes I would wait to advance the story so that I could clear out every war table operation on the off chance that the operations have some contextual effect on the main story missions. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has done this and it needlessly inflates playtime. Also it **** when after completing a long operation you're rewarded with junk. When I have a party with a warrior, rouge, and mage, and I go up to an item requiring action from a mage (like activating a veil fire torch) while I'm playing as a warrior it would be nice if the a.i. mage in my party executed that action instead of me having to switch to them to do it. A minor gripe but having to switch characters to perform class specific environment actions needlessly increases game time without adding anything. The shared health potion thing ****. You can only carry a limited amount and because of this the result is frequent backtracking to inquisition camps to resupply your health potions. I understand it makes hard fights harder by having to manage your potion consumption correctly but the ultimate result is having to go back to a camp to resupply afterwards. Again needlessly increasing game time without adding anything. Great game overall.

Forza Horizon 2

This game is awesome. If you're a fan of the first Forza Horizon game or just open world racers in general than this is good title to add to your collection. PROS 1. Graphics are top notch, greatly improved over the first game. 2. The atmosphere feels more alive than the first game with the addition of weather effects, which look stunning, and more lively crowds that are actually walking around towns this time (in the first game they were only found at horizon event areas), albeit behind indestructible barricades so that you can't hit them. 3. Good selection of cars to chose from. I think it's something like 200+ not including dlc. 4. Custom paint job creator. Create your own or download someone else's, some people have come up with some amazing paint jobs. 5. There is a lot to do. There are 168 championships and each championship has 4 races to complete plus 30 bucket list challenges(drive a specific vehicle in the game to achieve a specific goal such as meet a target speed limit at a specific speed trap), 10 barnyard finds(search for a rare old vehicle), 5 showcase events(race against a unique vehicle, a train for example), and bonus signs to find and smash(these offer xp bonuses and fast travel discounts). You also have the ability to challenge any roaming NPC/drivatar you find to a race which will be randomly generated by the game. 6. The map is a very good size and the roads are not as enclosed as the first game, meaning you can go off road and explore the environment. 7. The soundtrack is excellent and has more variety than the first game. 8. No dumb intrusive story, just racing. 9. Diving mechanics are solid and fun. Anyone familiar with the first horizon game will find driving in this game much the same. 10. More rewarding then the first game. Every time you level up you get to either spin a wheel for a random prize(credits or cars) or you earn a skill point to spend on perks. Unlocking perks will help you earn credits and xp faster. CONS 1. Drivatars can be very annoying/aggravating to deal with. I can understand bumping and blocking me in a race but it's annoying when it happens in free roam. 2. This is just my opinion but I cannot stand the purely off road races, they frequently cross the lime from fun into frustration. I can deal with the fact you can't control your vehicle as much but I hate not being able to see where you are going and dirvatars being a bit too perfect on the off road courses. Plus there is the fact that a drivatar can miss a checkpoint and not have to turn around to go hit it but if you miss a checkpoint your pretty much f*****, better restart the race at that point because there is no way you are getting the lead back. So that's it, everything about this game is mostly good. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Just finished the game and I loved it. Really hope to see more entries in the "Middle Earth" franchise in the future. PROS: 1. Solid and fun fighting mechanics. 2. Nemesis system makes fights with bosses memorable and personal. When I got taken out by some of the Uruks I was all "Uh uh, not coo! I'm coming for you when I respawn!" Taking out the guy that killed you is so satisfying. 3. The branding system. Making Uruks and monsters fight for you is awesome. 4. The wide variety amongst the Uruks keeps things fresh. There are many different physical appearances and several different fighting types/units. 5. The graphics are great. What you'd hope too see on a next-gen console. I thought the foliage in particular was well done. 6. The story is intriguing and makes me want to delve further into the "Middle Earth" universe. 7. There is plenty of lore included with the game. 8. Gaining new abilities and upgrades has a satisfying pace to it. Getting the next ability/upgrade never feels impossible or too easy. CONS 1. Lack of variety in prisoners and monsters, talking about the physical appearances here. You'll be liberating prisoners a lot in this game and unfortunately every prisoner looks the same which I think is a major oversight. As far as the appearances of the monsters it's the same story as the prisoners but they move around so fast that you hardly notice, but it would be great if the devs went the extra mile to change this in any new games they add to this franchise. 2. The story develops a bit too quickly in the beginning of the game giving you no time to gain any sort of emotional connection to Talion's wife and son. 3. Occasionally I got stuck on some ledges I should of been able to walk on. This didn't happen very often. 4. You don't really get to fight the last two main story bosses which is a bit of a let down. I was really looking forward to a straight up fight with them but that didn't happen. 5. The camera can work against you when fighting in narrow corridors. For the people coming to this game thinking it's an RPG, well it isn't. There are some RPG elements in the game sure, but it's very much more of an action adventure game. If there is a sequel in the future it would be great if the nemesis system was expanded to include monsters. Hunting down the beast that took you out would be oh so satisfying.

Zoo Tycoon

Compared to the other entries in the Zoo Tycoon series this game is a major step backwards. The only thing this title has over the older games is better graphics but that's to be expected with a newer game. First and foremost the worst feature of this game is the "zoo limit" which once maxed out prevents you from adopting new animals and creating new structures. Aside from doing research and creating pathways every action you take will push you closer to reaching the zoo limit and it is reached very easily. You'll be given a big map to create your zoo on but you will never be able to fill it due to the zoo limit, once you reach the limit you'll probably have only to managed to cover 30% of the map. The limit also leads to other problems further on in the game when you'll have guests complaining about the lack of variety in your zoo but you won't be able to do anything about it because you've reached your limit. This zoo limit also makes the replayability of this game very low. It only takes a couple of hours before you feel like you've done everything you can do and don't feel a need to continue playing. Next is the severe lack of customization in this game when compared to the previous zoo tycoon games. Want to build a custom environment for your animals? Sorry you get to choose from preset animal biomes such as Savannah - small, Savannah - medium, and Savannah - large. Creating an environment that meets the needs of the animal you're trying to house was one of the best things about the other games. While I can understand the need to make it less complicated for a console game, I feel it was dumbed down far too much here. The animal interactions are okay but they do feel kind of forced and there's only a few to choose from. I can't imagine anyone investing too much time doing them. If you're a fan of the original Zoo Tycoon games I strongly recommend avoiding this game, you'll be very disappointed. If you're a parent looking to buy a fun game for your kid I recommend the original Zoo Tycoon (works with Windows xp), and Zoo Tycoon 2 (works with Windows xp, and Windows 7), they're cheaper and have a lot more content in them to keep your kid entertained longer. I assure you they are not too complicated for kids, I was a kid when I played the original Zoo Tycoon and I loved it.
