Genuinely one of my all time favourite cinema experiences. Beautiful, funny, heartbreaking and so amazing in almost every aspect!

Resident Evil5

To start off, this is NOT ”Resident Evil” so if you are going into this movie as a fan of the lore from the games then you’ll be severely disappointed and left scratching your head. This movie is for the most part a basic but fun horror-comedy with names and items from the games placed around the movie and a few fun nods to “video game logic” that is truly fantastic but sadly, it never goes any deeper than that. I have also figured out why I’m often dissatisfied after the credits roll in the Zach Cregger films I’ve watched. His writing lack in the conclusion department, like halfway through the script he forgets what movie he was writing when he started. It feels disconnected and unserious which makes the whole movie feel like something you could watch in the background while doing something else and still be along for the ride. There are hints at deep character growth and some seriously good world building but it’s always gone before the blink of an eye. Same as how it ends, blink at the wrong time and you’ll open your eyes to the end credits and wonder what just happened. As all Cregger films, the introduction and setup of the premise is 10/10 with amazing and interesting atmosphere but it looses momentum after the halfway point and stumbles hard and Resident Evil doesn’t even finish the race.

The Odyssey7

The first and last act is too sluggish and quite boring for modern standard of storytelling, the middle act, Odyssey’s journey home, is great in so many ways. The visual effects, the cinematography, the acting is all absolutely amazing but the pacing and story around it severely hurts the experience of this movie in my opinion. All the stops along the way on his journey home needed a lot more time to be fleshed out and should have been given the screentime instead of the more boring stuff on Ithika that constantly halts the momentum of the story. The “modern english” monologues also takes you out of the movie a lot. If it wasn’t for the S tier cinematography and effects this movie would have been a 6/10 at best.
