I believe this is the single most overhated/underrated game ever made. The issue arises from people expecting a Wii version of Rock Band or Guitar Hero and jumping on the hate bandwagon when that's not what they get. This game is all about discovering how different instruments and rhythms can change the feel of the same song structure. You can take various songs and change their instrumentation to give them a completely different sound, and successful examples of this can be found in the games premade demo tracks. Along with this, the game itsself teaches you how to make these different styles in the lessons mastery page, and each instrument has a surprising amount of flexibility in the sounds they can make if you put the time in to discover them. Even if you want the typical rhythm game Rock Band style thing, you can enjoy the handbell harmony mode which allows you to play a Rock Band style minigame at various difficulties and speeds while actually making the music instead of uselessly strumming to falling notes. There is also the pitch perfect mode which acts as an early introduction to basic music theory and was my personal first experience with really looking into how different pitches interact with each other. Understandably, not everyone wants to take this game seriously or experiment with the limitless possibilities, but this game can still act as a fun party game if you're just joking around. With the funny instruments and songs, I've had a lot of fun with a group of friends just fooling around and butchering songs in Wii Music. Many people will never experience what this game has to offer because they never give it an honest chance. Ignore the reviews, play the game for longer than 10 minutes, try the different modes, and let out a little creativity, and I promise you'll discover why to this day Wii Music continues to have a fairly active community, still making music.
