A beautifully photographed and acted film which will have little resonance outside Australia but which is very powerful here. The violence is shocking but not at all as extreme as some are claiming - and neither is it gratuitous. Ultimately the film fails to find a resolution (a climactic scene of confrontation falls flat) but that may well be why it strikes me as such an honest piece of work: it reflects the tragedy of my country.

Because I think 'The Blackcoat's Daughter' is the best horror film of the last ten years I was eagerly anticipating this. Unfortunately it was a disappointment. It's beautiful to look at and the sound design is great, but it wastes its talented cast in almost a series of tableaux with very little substance. The lack of jump scares is commendable, the sparse narrative is not a problem, but the posturing ultimately wears thin. Osgood Perkins is an exciting horror director, but this is not a success.

Superb. Tarantino's standard tropes are refreshed here by his great cast and brilliant pacing. A liberating bird is flipped to Time and Tide here.
