Super Mega Space Blaster Special9
Feb 12, 2020
Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo is one of the best retro shmups I've played and at under 5 bucks you're going to be hard pressed to find a better arena shooter. There are 5 modes each with their own mechanics. My favorite was Save the Colony, a mode in which you have to rescue astronauts and fight of the alien space scum. This miode is a little easier than the others as you don't die on contact with the edge of the screen. Another mode is survival mode where you must make sure you don't run out of ammo and fuel while fight your way to the boss. This mode is challenging but a lot of fun too. The other mode is a mode where you must protect your mother-ship. You get rewarded for combos and again it's quite hard because of the insta-death screen edges. All these modes can be played in 2-player local coop which is loads of fun. There are 2 more local multiplayer modes which are fun but feel a little tagged on. In all the modes there are loads of power-up weapons to collect each of which can be upgraded in the shop. My favourites are the laser which is like a light-saber and the homing missiles. There are loads of ships to choose from once unlocked each with different handling and stats. There is a warp-engine that can be unlocked in the shop for 50 credits which removes the screen-edge walls of death and makes the game a lot easier. Ships and upgrades are unlocked via credit which you collect from destroyed enemies and from completing challenges. These challeges add real longevity to the game and give you a sense of purpose. Challenges like surviving for 3 minutes without shooting or destroying 100 nemies while stationary are really fun to complete. The soundtrack by Electric Fan Death is awesome, the style reminds me of Depeche Mode and goes way beyond the usual chip-tunes heard in many smallish shmup. The hand-drawn graphics do the trick and have a hidden layer of detail that can be hard to see at first. This game is difficult like retro games were, but if you put in a little time you will find an amzing game that is a lot of fun and provides hours of entertainment. Summary: Great retro space shooter. Lots of fun modes and coop fun with a friend. Like the variety of ships and weapons. Really challenging gameplay but so much fun, you just have to put in the time initially to learn how to play. Cool retro soundtrack too. (PS4 & Xbox One versions played)

The game is a kaleidoscopic colorful bullethell romp through space all packaged in a vertical sh'mup. the game has some really nice touches like choosing male or female pilots. Each play-through is different due to random generation. Overall a really fun game worth playing especially for the price. (PS4 version played)
