The Book of Unwritten Tales9

I've played a variety of puzzle games, but no game has been as engaging and interesting as this one. The characters are funny and interesting, there's actually a plot, and it makes me laugh left and right. The game is constantly breaking the fourth wall (referring to itself as a game), there are hilarious references to the world of RPGs and MMOs, and the puzzles are actually logical. It's witty, clever...okay, it's just pure genius. There are a couple parts that annoyed me (where I KNEW what I had to do, but due to timing or whatever, wasn't able to do it for a few clicks; also the last zone where I couldn't easily get to the shaman's hut via the map like the other areas), but for the most part, it's an extremely enjoyable ride that I'd recommend to anyone that likes puzzle games. I'm not a huge fan of point and click adventures, but this game is up there with my favorites.

In my latest obsession with indie games, this is the best one I've played so far. The concept of going into people's minds and gaining clues, sorting their emotional baggage, and just looking around in the "world as they see it" is fun and interesting (as well as creative). One of the levels is the mind of a mutated lungfish; it doesn't get much more creative than that! It's much easier to play with a controller than the keyboard, but there really aren't any problems with the keyboard, either. The camera angles are a little strange and takes some getting used to (especially in the last level), but there are more positives than negatives with this game. The cut-scenes range from curious to hilarious, and though it feels short before the main plot is revealed, you still get to know a good amount of the characters. Some parts require thinking, and the last level really takes patience, but it's just the sort of game that you can play over and over again.

Great art, creepy ambiance, and physics puzzles that range from easy to having multiple parts. It is a rather short game, and I didn't ever think I would replay it after getting all the achievements, but I sometimes do. Expect to die quite a lot while figuring out the puzzles, and in a rather gruesome way (which I always cringe and close my eyes at, to be honest). The most satisfying part of the game is solving a difficult puzzle without looking it up on a FAQ. Downsides? The storyline is lacking, and there isn't much to do once you've beaten it and gotten every achievement (besides show it to friends and watch their reactions). Otherwise, it's a great game. I don't think it's worth the $9.99, but it's certainly worth playing if you like puzzle games.

The graphics and music are great, but then the game goes downhill. I lasted about 30 minutes before I turned it off. It's completely just hacking away (or using magic to blow away) at enemies, and typically, you have to kill every single enemy to clear an area and move onto the next one. If you die before they're cleared, you start in town and have to do it all over again. If you die clearing another section, you have to run through the areas you cleared to get to that spot (I've seen more crippling death penalties, but this is annoying). My biggest issues with the game (besides that it takes no thinking ability what-so-ever to play, and the controls aren't good; I can't always lock onto targets or lock out...nearly got stuck in the tutorial because of that, and I was using a compatible controller) are: 1) You can't (from what I've played through so far) carry health items with you or know healing magic. Being able to heal in and out of combat is needed in RPGs; this is lacking it. 2) You can only equip two items at a time. There's no reason why I can't wear a glove, hold a shield, and wear a pendant. In this game, apparently, that's a problem. 3) The obnoxious beeping when you're low on health. I had to listen to it in Zelda games, but this is 10x worse and 10x louder. 4) The prices for items in the shop are ridiculously high. Sure, by the time I cleared the doors of the second area, I could afford the HP UP potion and a **** after selling an item, the gloves. Once an item was purchased, the price then doubled for the next level of item. In short, this game isn't worth your time unless mindless mob hacking and grinding through enemies appeals to you.
