A fantastic racing "simcade" title featuring a wide array of licensed cars, race tracks (real and fantasy), quick fast paced races, and one of the best soundtracks ever featured in any game. This game almost single handedly made me a motorsport fan and made me more interested in the inner workings of real life cars. The graphics were also fantastic for the time and constraints of the original Playstation, although they don't really hold up today. Still, it's a must play for anybody even remotely interested in motorsport or racing games.

Rage is one of the few truly bad titles put out by id Software. It was John Carmack's last hurrah as a game "designer" (no sleight against him, his games pushed the industry forward, but not this one) and it's more of a hackneyed tech demo with a boring story and awfully handling vehicles shoehorned into a dull brown/gray sci-fi environment that is totally uninviting. They basically took the worst parts of games like Unreal Tournament 2004 and Borderlands and stuck it in here and made a game out of it. Recently they released Rage 2, I don't know how they justified this when the original game was so appallingly bad in both sales and reception, but that game's terrible too.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition

Doom 3 gets a bad rap for reasons I really don't understand. A lot of people parrot the phrase "it's a decent game, but not a Doom game," well I'm here to say to those people, 'you're wrong, because this game is Doom to it's core.' It's closer to what the original id crew imagined the original Doom game could be than the silly comic book "Rip and Tear!" satire that the current games are, but that doesn't make it bad or not Doom by any means. It's creepy, gory, and even fast paced if you want to play it like that, especially if you are familiar with Quake 2/Quake 3's strafejumping and weapon physics and movement which makes "speedruns" of this game super easy. BFG edition adds a new campaign and quality of life features like 120hz refresh rates, simple high resolution and VR support, and a body mounted flashlight that people complained about endlessly in the original game that for some reason is now bad. I will say one change I dislike about BFG edition compared to vanilla Doom 3 is that the new game is easier, with dark areas brightened up excessively and AI dumbed down to be easier for new players and console players to deal with. And if you don't like it, you still have the original game to play, which is excellent in it's own right and can be customized to exactly what you want.

Low quality cashgrab that stole assets and wasn't even properly completed. Bugs and glitches galore. Don't waste your money or time on this one.

Doom 2 is my personal favorite game in the Doom series. It took the original game and made it even faster, grittier, and more badass. You get the awesome super shotgun, a slew of new enemies to use it against, an awesome soundtrack, and a lot of great and awesome new levels. Some of the levels are a bit goofy, especially some of the city levels, but you get more good maps than bad ones. When this game came out I was so amazed by the size and detail of the levels and how many enemies you could rip through in a massive fight. The community is still going strong to this day with tons of custom WADs, source ports, and some people are even still playing online multiplayer. It's still the best single player FPS ever released in my opinion.

A return to form for id. It's just pure, unadulterated, fast FPS gameplay with extras like secrets, special challenges, throwback levels, and other fun goodies. There are times the game is slowed down somewhat by story or weapon upgrade screens but the combat will keep you coming back to this game. It's a bit challenging but so satisfying to destroy a group of 20+ demons at once on Ultra-Nightmare!

A must play for RTS fans. You get three great campaigns, with three unique races, an extremely smooth and simple interface, and an economy an combat system that is so good that it set the standard for all RTS games that came after it. It's still played online competitively and while it's showing it's age these days, you can't deny Starcraft was the game that really put this genre on the map.

Duke Nukem 3D is a truly brilliant, and ultimately, hilarious game. At the time it was released there wasn't really anything like it, the environments and artwork in the game was the closest thing we had to 3D (although it was really 2.5D). I'll never forget the very first level, looking at a mirror and using a toilet bowl to make Duke take a piss for the first time is one of my all time favorite gaming memories. The weapons and enemies are extremely creative and unique with all kinds of fun ways to kill the enemies, including freezing them and shrinking them. Duke steals the show with his quick one liners that are littered throughout the game. It was just a silly, fun game and there really hasn't been anything quite like it since.

DOOM Eternal

Doom Eternal is probably best summed up in one word, "confusion." It retains a lot of Doom mechanics and adds on with even more mechanics, upgrades, and puzzles. Early on, you can't hardly take two steps forward without seeing some tutorial for a new mechanic. There is a LOT more to try to remember when playing this game. The environments, while pretty, are extremely confusing to navigate despite them being linear. There are lots of environmental puzzles and not as much in the way of corridor shooting. On one occasion I encountered a bug where a puzzle was slightly bugged and I was stuck as I didn't realize I was experiencing a bug. There's too much story in this game. While Doom 2016 mocks its own story by letting you ignore it, showing the Doom guy rage on the environment while characters talk, Doom Eternal is a parody of itself in this aspect by including crazy priests, humans that are in awe, and demons that are literally so scared of you they hand you weapons. It slows the game down and just comes off as weird. While it's somewhat fun, it's definitely not as well polished as Doom 2016 and tries to add too much, ultimately making it a bit of a slog to get through and a confusing mess. It's also much, much harder than Doom 2016, which isn't a bad thing, but if you were expecting Doom 2016's difficulty again, you're in for a rude awakening. Overall, fans of Doom 2016 will probably enjoy this, but classic Doom fans might not.

DOOM 64

This port is pretty well made and includes most of the creature comfort features of modern shooters, while not straying too far from the original Doom 64 release. The guy who worked on the infamous Doom64EX source port conversion worked on this official rerelease as well and the quality shines through. It's a little too easy for keyboard and mouse users and there are small bugs here and there but it's very smooth and runs at modern resolutions up to 144hz refresh rates. If you've never tried Doom 64 I'd highly recommend as it has a different spin on Doom and has interesting types of puzzles along with updated enemies and weapons.
