Retro Rewind - Video Store Simulator

As a former Blockbuster employee, this game hit a lot of the right nostalgia notes for me. The atmosphere, video store management, and overall vibe brought back plenty of memories, and the core gameplay loop is surprisingly addictive albeit a bit too repetitive. Performance was smooth throughout my playtime, and I never ran into any major technical issues. That said, the game feels like it reaches its limits fairly quickly. Once you hire a couple of employees and get things running efficiently, it starts to feel like you've seen most of what the game has to offer. For a management/simulation game, the progression is short, and I found myself wishing there were more systems to unlock and engage with. One of my bigger criticisms is that it was released as a "finished" product while some major features, such as video game rentals, are still in development. The foundation is solid, but it feels like there are pieces missing that would have added much-needed depth and longevity. The fake movie titles got a few laughs out of me, especially the new releases that parody iconic films, but the humor became repetitive after a while. Many of the titles felt randomly generated, a lot of them started blending together after the first few hours. The food service mini games were also a bit too simplistic and didn't add much beyond some light busy work. It would have been cool if it continued on into the VHS->DVD transition, had video game consoles and games released over time (which isn’t yet implemented but planned I guess), and if there were other features like a cart to help carry more movies at once, the ability to lookup customer history and so on, it would have felt a bit more complete. Overall, Retro Rewind is a fun, nostalgic management game with a solid foundation and an addictive gameplay loop. I enjoyed my time with it, but it feels like a game that could have used a little more content and polish before being considered complete, I'd consider this to be an "Early Access" game. If the developers continue expanding the systems and features, it could become something truly special.

Crimson Desert is a game that constantly feels like it wants to be deeper than it actually is. There are countless systems layered on top of one another, companions, progression mechanics, crafting, exploration rewards, and combat upgrades, but once you start digging into them, most reveal themselves to be surprisingly shallow. Instead of adding meaningful complexity, they often create busywork. The combat initially shows promise, but it quickly becomes repetitive. Encounters are all just lengthy battles against damage-sponge enemies, where victory feels more like a test of patience. When you get other playable characters it doesn't help matters, it felt like extra busy work. Quest design is arguably the game's weakest aspect. Many objectives are tedious, poorly paced and forgettable. Even when the game encourages exploration, the payoff is rarely worth the effort. Well hidden items found in remote corners of the map often end up being no better, and sometimes worse, than equipment available near the beginning of the game. As a result, exploration lacks the sense of discovery found in other open world games. Large portions of the world begin to blend together, making the adventure feel flatter than it should. Technical issues further drag down the experience. During my playthrough on PlayStation 5, the game crashed multiple times, which only added to the growing frustration. All that said, I genuinely enjoyed wandering through some of the towns and discovering new regions. The world has moments of charm, and there were stretches where I found myself having a good time simply soaking in the atmosphere. There is some enjoyment to be found, but it's buried beneath repetitive combat, weak quests, shallow systems, and technical issues.

Wait for a sale maybe. The combat starts out fun, but the novelty wears off fast. Once you're dealing with 6–8 enemies all shooting and chasing you at the same time, it becomes more frustrating than exciting. Having to hack enemies before you can damage them is interesting at first, but wit multiple enemies it just feels annoying. Add in the constant ammo shortages, and many fights turn into running around like a chicken with its head cut off waiting for enough ammo to recharge so you can actually play the game again. The story and voice acting didn't land for me either. The game clearly wants the character interactions to be charming and emotional, but they came across as cringe rather than endearing. It's also surprisingly short for a full-price release. By the time things start opening up, the credits are already around the corner. I'm honestly confused by some of the glowing reviews. There's a decent game here, and the presentation is impressive, but the combat became increasingly annoying, the story never clicked, and the overall package feels too small for the asking price.
