The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This game takes everything that made other Zelda games fun and concentrates it. While some of the other Zelda games have left me wondering "Do I like the game, or just the story of the game", Breath of the Wild gives you a breath of fresh air, leaving the player to enjoy the game only as much as they want to. It's a game whose entire directive is for the player to explore their curiosity, giving you plenty of vectors for that. Exploring the vast expanse of a post apocalyptic Hyrule I found myself on far more than 1 occasion wondering "what's at the top of this" or "what's down here" only to be surprised by and gifted with a korok seed, ancient ruins, a hotspring in the middle of some wintery mountains, or a beautiful sight of hyrule. This is a game that uses towers to unlock map locations, however the beauty of its implementation is that you neither have to get the towers nor do you have to get them in order. Not only this, but while finding most of the towers isn't difficult, actually getting to them and climbing up them is another one of the game's challenges, with each tower having its own unique setup. And despite the time I've spent running around in this implementation of hyrule, 150 hours in fact, plus having watched several of my friends play for hours, I know there's many things I haven't found, seen, or noticed in the game. Breath of the Wild breathes new life into The Legend of Zelda, as well as the open world game genre and action rpgs as a whole. I'm excited to see where the industry goes from the lessons this game has taught it.

On the surface this game has no strategy. That was my issue. I at first detested this game trying to figure out the individual battles. Then I realized that the battles are actually more or less meant to stall me from completing the maps I'm put on. From there, I started to enjoy myself. The dialogue of this game tends to ramble on about things that ultimately are just very vague concepts never actually described in universe, but it does have some high points as well as some potential philosophical substance. This is a game of the Fate/* series, and as such plays itself as much more serious than it actually is, but the gameplay can be pretty decent at times once you figure it out. The main reason I only rate it a 5 is because it's difficult to figure out what the fun actually is. While there is fun to be had, any form of entertainment for the purpose of fun should be making it easily digestible and Fate/Extella failed at that for me. YMMV

This isn't a complex game. It has no depth, limited challenge, and only 2 game modes which divide neatly into single player and multiplayer. The single-player is basically what you'd get if you had the classic game snake in 3D on a sphere. The multiplayer is just your and other players' bears running around the planet, leaving behind ribbons you can't run into. Despite the lack of depth, and how simplistic this game is, it's a heck of a lot of fun given its price-point. My friends and I put a solid 40-50 minutes into this game just repeatedly trying to beat each other, cut one another off, and strategize and create traps for each other. Don't get this game thinking it's going to be a great game, or have any depth at all. Get it if you like dumb, stupid, silly, simple fun on a minimal budget.
