"Surface" is steeped in Spielberg, and is better Spielberg than Spielberg has managed in quite some time.

This by-the-numbers entry is pretty damn toothless. [23 Sep 2005, p.81]

Interesting, but the sprawling pilot doesn't do "Surface" any favors.

There isn't a moment of wonder or suspense in Surface, or a single performance or character that is even remotely involving.

Whoever wrote the first episode of “Lost” didn’t crowd the screen with dimwits forced to recite grade-B TV drama drivel. By that standard, “Surface” doesn’t get a pass.

You won't really want to spend another hour with these people.

One of the lead characters is an evolutionary biologist, which makes sense, since there's not a lot of intelligent design here.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays a woman who's recovering from a complete loss of memory after she's rescued from falling over the side of a ferry. Or was she pushed? This series slowly unravels the intricate interweavings of her relationship with her seemingly devoted husband (Oliver Jackson-James) and others in their orbit. Clues to move the mystery along are meted out regularly, but even with some twists, the ending is ultimately unfullilling and obviously set up for a 2nd season. The performances are earnest with gobs of lingering looks and tearful confessions. This helps keep the show interesting, because the pacing is always too slow and tension never develops. For all the murder mysteries out there, this one is stylish (a black house among the pastel Victorians!), but simply moves too slowly and lacks sufficient surprises to rise above ****...surface.
