The first few new episodes set up higher stakes and deeper, more slow-burning problems than those of the first season, which often had a snafu-of-the-week formulaic quality. The writing is a degree subtler; there are fewer complaints about green tech and more anti-corporatist spiels. .... Tommy and Angela’s post-divorce reunion, against both of their better judgments, becomes a source of winning stability in Season 2.

Sticking with that winning blueprint, this love letter to the dying art of dredging oil from the dusky depths of Texas drills deep and strikes gold.

My opinion is the writing is great if you a working man. Sam Elliott character is great and the writers are doing a great job in adding his story. Up to episode 8 see you next season

It's not exactly high art, but the characters are endearing; it's a slightly embarrassing but enjoyable series. Billy Bob and Ali Larter do a good job. And it's great to see Sam Elliot in the second season.

The second season of Landman is stronger than the first, mainly because the women on the show are in a stronger position than they were last season, giving Thornton’s Tommy all he can handle.

While the first two episodes provided didn't quite capture me the way season 1 did, season 2 has at least laid out some interesting paths forward with the introductions of a few new characters.

There are considerable opportunities for raised stakes, character growth, and fresh drama. All that said, there's a lot that remains the same and seems to have no visible trajectory for significant change.

Season one’s minimal plotting didn’t leave season two much to work with, but it’s still surprising that “Death And A Sunset” features no follow-up to the finale’s other big cliffhanger. .... So…hooray, welcome Sam Elliott to the Landman cast! And…oh no, his character is horrible and sexist. Why can’t it be all fun?

Billy Bob is still doing his thing, and Demi Moore (who plays the widow of Tommy’s former boss) now has actual lines and scenes, but the good news ends there. It becomes clear that the worst parts of Landman have gotten a lot, lot worse.

A steep decline in the writing from last season, with a lot of really insipid soap opera plot lines that had me baffled and a little insulted that they would pass this off as adult entertainment. This is dumb stuff for dumb people. And look - I love Tommy ( what's with the bad blonde hair dye job? ) and it did have some fun moments, but sadly, just not enough. 4 stars

Unfortunately, this season was a complete and utter disaster compared to season 1. What was most infuriating was the wasted talent. Demi Moore, Andy Garcia, Sam Elliott (and even Billy Bob Thornton) were completely sidelined because Taylor Sheridan thought it was a good idea to turn season 2 into a stage for two useless, frivolous, totally parasitic women (mother and daughter characters) whose only function in life is to be high-class pr*stitut*s. Not to mention how awful and mediocre the characters of the widow/gold digger and the stripper/physiotherapist are. The only real highlight of the series was the dialogue between Billy Bob and Sam Elliott regarding the show The View; I laughed so hard. Otherwise, I'm sorry, but season 2 was so mediocre I never thought I'd see it. Every time I think about that season and see how much brilliant, absolute cinematic talent was wasted on Demi Moore, Andy Garcia, Sam Elliott, and Billy Bob Thornton, it's infuriating.

This show feels like a missed opportunity for a gritty drama based on the Texas oil industry. The ingredients are there, Billy Bob Thornton excels in his role, there's some talented people involved in production clearly. The show falls apart as soon as the wife and daughter are on screen. I can't understand why keep giving them so much screentime (I guess because of the T&A but please give your viewers some credit).
