This is a show that’s quite comfortable working from its inspiration, and much less so when it’s attempting to forge its own path. That last part isn’t quite in the Elle Woods spirit, but “Elle” gets close enough.

Cute but instantly forgettable, “Elle” isn’t awful, but it plays like unnecessary fan fiction.

It feels stuck somewhere between the show it thought it wanted to be and the show it has the potential to become.

Unless we eventually learn that Elle suffered a memory wipe after returning to LA for college, the series—already renewed for season two—offers little more than surface-level escapism aimed at millennials who are nostalgic for the ’90s.

Both crushingly derivative and makes no sense in terms of the franchise’s timeline.

Despite a bang-up supporting cast, though, almost every episode of “Elle” seems to drag.

It's all so trifling and annoying. It lacks cohesion and clarity, like we're watching the whole sordid affair through a rain-smudged Seattle window.

A silly, but funny and entertaining for a day when there’s nothing else to watch on TV. However, the target audience is definitely teenagers. The best part of the show is certainly the 90s setting: the music, clothes, sets, cars, technology, and references, anyway, a delightful and well-recreated 90s nostalgia.

Elle is the kind of prequel that stems from a dangerous question: did we really need to know how this character became who she is? The answer lies somewhere in the middle.Lexi Minetree is, without a doubt, the biggest highlight. She doesn’t try to copy Reese Witherspoon, but finds her own way to make the teenage Elle work. She has charisma, sweetness, comedic timing, and an energy that carries much of the **** problem is that when the story tries to fit this origin story into what we already know from Legally Blonde, everything feels a bit off. The series aims to show Elle discovering her strength in high school, but this ends up undermining part of the journey that the original movie handled so well at ****’s still charming, has great costumes, and a delightful nostalgic vibe, but it often feels like just another teen drama using pink and a famous brand to seem more special than it really is.
