Bad Monkey is delightfully impure escapism. [26 Aug - 15 Sep 2024, p.4]

The 10-episode crime dramedy, developed by Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso), gives Vaughn a showcase to do what he does best — though with a gentler, more mature polish.

This is pretty good. The mystery is complex enough to keep a season going. Vince Vaughn is funny. The story is funny. The characters are funny. The misunderstandings are funny. The dialog is funny. The pacing is funny. This is one of the few TV shows that I actually look forward to the next episode. It's not a perfect show but it is good enough. Our view is: "watch this and enjoy. Stream it and get some popcorn."

Vince Vaughn has a unique comic style of off-hand comments that's usually amusing. It's working for him in this series, as he plays a former police detective who's been reduced to restaurant inspector. Even so, he insists on pursuing the mystery of a severed arm that was fished out of the water in the Keys. There's also a parallel plot in the Bahamas featuring Ronald Peet as a man whose house has been demolished by a real estate developer. The voiceover promises that these 2 plots will intertwine later in the series. There's also cast of enjoyable supporting characters. Meanwhile, the mystery twists and Vaughn's wisecracks keep it entertaining, making it more rewarding than the typical procedural. Review based on 3 out of 10 eps.

What makes “Bad Monkey” special is that there is nothing special about it. It’s a little wayward at times, what with its huge cast of characters and myriad plot lines, some of which are, strictly speaking, unnecessary, but it gets the job done in a good old-fashioned colorful way.

“Bad Monkey” may err on the side of too much, but anything less wouldn’t be true Hiaasen — neither would anything quieter. Garrulous brilliance is what the author, and Vaughn, were made to blather.

Florida is a strange, divisive place, but Bad Monkey, while not as propulsive as the book, gives it a mostly pleasant and palatable time in the sun.

The skinny, barely plausible story feels overstretched at 10 episodes and the energy ebbs away in a closing episode in which loose ends are not so much tied up as scrunched into a ball of paper and tossed into the nearest wastebasket. But as a character piece that serves up a snapshot of eccentric Florida life, Bad Monkey is a tale slips down as easily as a sundowner on a moonlit beach.

Sad as it may be, his [Vince Vaughn's] presence is hardly enough to muster enthusiasm for further trips into this peculiar world, with an atmosphere unable to stand out from its contemporaries nor leave any semblance of a lasting impression. It’s hardly bad, but this is one monkey that’s a bit too bananas to truly appreciate.

Fun, well made and engaging. Hiaasen has finally gotten a media treatment worthy of his prose.

Vince Vaughn is usual self. Funny at times. The commentary throughout is very annoying and unnecessary

So far it's a six. It reminds me of a number of different PI vibed cop shows/comedies and that's a good thing. Vince Vaughn is perfectly cast and quippy af. Natalie Martinez is and will always be perfect. She could be on QVC and I'd watch. Great supporting cast as well. I'm intrigued and I'll watch all ten seasons. If it keeps going on this trajectory, I can only hope for a season 2.

The narrator talking endlessly absolutely destroys the vibe. Wanted to like the show but the commentary is so annoying.

Over produced trash TV. Nothing compelled me beyond the opening few minutes.Vince Vaughn has done an interesting mixture of the good the bad and the ugly. This is firmly in the ugly category. Avoid.
