A House of Dynamite8
Oct 27, 2025
All-star cast in a well-told, completely terrifying, story. Superb editing and direction realize a sophisticated screenplay.

Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere7
Oct 25, 2025
Modestly told story of Springsteen’s struggles and the relationship between his art and inner demons. Escapes cliche via honesty and strong performances.

Superman7

James Gunn revivifies the DC Universe, bringing wit, romance and fun, while revitalizing not only the main character but many other super heroes. Is there an allegory for current world affairs? Perhaps, but that’s not the main point. Superman embodies ideals and values, and Gunn lifts them up with heroic spirit.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim6
Feb 28, 2025
Solid production, animation and acting, but not terrifically compelling. Worthwhile for fans; good, but not great.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy8

Solid performances & well-written; an intelligent rom-com with heart. Great addition to the series.

Complex and moving: I was completely absorbed. DuVernay found a way to turn what could have been a dense documentary into a compelling story full of important ideas, but keeping her characters in the forefront. She humanizes the history. Wonderful film-making.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga8
May 29, 2024
More of a character study than nonstop action, but only in comparison to Fury Road. Still lots of great stunts and effects. Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth both terrific, though Hemsworth seems to be having more fun, villainously chewing the scenery, while Taylor-Joy is constrained by the need to develop her character into one we already know. Still she brings power, nuance and some surprises

Entertaining, with good production values, decent effects, some good performances and adequate direction. Somewhat hamstrung by a weak screenplay that are filled with unlikely incidents and tropes instead of characters. But if you go with the flow it’s an okay ride.

The Marvels6
Nov 12, 2023
Fun but not great. Muddy overwrought first half finally gives way to lighter tone and laugh out loud setpieces. Fewer, shorter, fight sequences and more honest or funny character interactions would’ve helped, but that doesn’t seem to be the Marvel way.

Killers of the Flower Moon9

Scorcese is a master at the top of his form. Acting topnotch, with standout performances from Gladstone, DiCaprio & DeNiro with many solid supporting cast members. Beautiful muted-noir cinematography. A bit long and complex but rewarding & moving.

Funny but thought-provoking intelligent entertainment. Consistently clever writing, strong performances, and Greta Gerwig’s direction is often brilliant.

Nice adaptation of the terrific graphic novel. Good, fun animation and excellent voice acting.

Persuasion5
Jul 15, 2022
Decent acting, cinematography and direction in service of a weak script and dubious choice of tone. Where Jane Austen needled and dissected, this movie swings a sledgehammer. Not only do viewers deserve better, so does one of Austen’s best stories. Rather a waste.

Wonder Woman 19846
Dec 27, 2020
Has some charm and a few chops, but the talented cast is mostly wasted by the disappointingly dull and dumb script.

Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood9
Jul 28, 2019
One of the best films of the year and of Tarantino's career. This is a valentine to Hollywood, to the western genre and to the power of storytelling. There’s a lot to disagree with, even while appreciating the viewpoint, and digging the layers. It’s a movie about movies, westerns, Hollywood, fairy tales, and America.

Captain Marvel7
Mar 9, 2019
A fun popcorn movie, with good performances, especially by Larson and Jackson, but disappointingly by the numbers. The character, and Larson's portrayal, are great additions to the MCU, and I’m looking forward to more of her. But this outing was good, not great.

Aquaman6

Okay and kind of fun, but not great. Has its share of good SFX, robust action and feels, but it all seems predictably standard and a bit more manufactured than earned. Better than Batman vs. Superman or Justice League, but not up to Wonder Woman's standard.
