It is engrossing stuff, as a cautionary tale as well as a taste of the spirit that leads people into explorations more bold than wise. The lure of the ocean’s mysteries (and the Titanic’s enduring romance) are vividly conveyed.

Director Mark Monroe’s nearly two-hour Titan: The OceanGate Disaster is the most exhaustive exploration thus far.

With first-hand accounts, an accurate dissection of a tragedy is made; a tragedy in which the main ingredients were arrogance and negligence. 109 minutes that are well worth the risk.

I really enjoyed this. Like a lot of folks I followed the whole disaster from the beginning. They interviewed all the important people connected to the disaster, very candid and moving stuff. They did a great job of laying out all the events that led up to the nightmare. Even though you know the outcome, theres still a feeling of impending doom. Very much like going in the sub i reckon.

Directed by Mark Monroe, the film wisely does not linger in the lurid details of the Titan’s catastrophic end, and instead uses an investigative framing that sketches the company’s origins and use of carbon fiber while chronicling a series of problematic dives leading up to its final plunge.

“Titan” wants to start and end with Rush’s actions when it feels like that conclusion is already littered on the story’s surface.

While there’s nothing egregiously cynical about the film’s nature or design, its forensic tone belies the familiarity of its evidence, and its subject has already been too well-excavated for the sincerity of Monroe’s efforts to shake off that signature true-crime stink (the pungent stench of a once-proud medium that’s been left to rot on streaming).

In telling a story that’s only being put to film in the first place because of how much schadenfreude online lookie-loos gained from it when it was happening live, the doc doesn’t say anything beyond the obvious.

It is a good documentary but not enough for the viewers, we know that the CEO of OceanGate is a very arrogant person. There are many lessons to be learned.
