One of its strong points is being faithful to the original text, with all the intrigue and drama. The final act leaves us wondering what will come next.

While not as eventful as the first film, this is still a worthy entry in the best adaptation of The Three Musketeers to date. Eva Green stands out as the treacherous Madame De Winter. The plot is quite different from the novel and other filmed versions, but still quite satisfying. Will there be a Part 3? I hope so.

As yarns go, it is all comfortingly chunky and luxuriantly spun – winter comfort viewing that treats its audience as gallantly as its heroes treat their mission, while taking itself just seriously enough.

If you loved D’Artagnan, you won’t be let down by Milady. If you’ve not seen D’Artagnan, then get ready to enjoy the year’s best non-Barbenheinmer double bill.

Martin Bourboulon’s two films more than hold their own with Hollywood’s best versions of this classic cloak-and-swordplay mystery, preserving the surprises and adding a few fresh ones to iconic, noble-hearted “All for one, and one for all” heroics.

It’s Eva Green who steals the elaborate show, making villainy seem like the best possible career choice for a beautiful woman, circa the 1620s.

It’s still a tremendous spectacle: all four of the musketeers are very attractive characters, particularly the noble and agonised Civil as D’Artagnan.

The second part of 'The Three Musketeers' is not as bad as a blockbuster: there are good moments of action, and the handheld camera work is notable. However, none of this delivers the dose of excitement it promises. A plethora of subplots (one particularly absurd) and characters make it impossible to keep up with it. The only one that stands out is Eva Green's Milady since her enigmatic involvement in the events is one of the few things that generate some intrigue; the main mystery lacks a strong hook. It's always interesting to see a country adapt its literary works and show them to the world in its language, but this one needed a better script.
