The delights of the movie lie in its zany characters, its goofy settings, and above all its surrealistic visual style.

The New York Times
The movie itself triumphs by similar means; it is a marvel of unleashed childishness, like a birthday party on the edge of spinning out of control.

Boston Globe
The film, which is as economically made as it is primitively animated, ambles from adventure to adventure, taking nothing seriously, not even itself.

I like my SpongeBob a little less lumbering, a little more free-associational, without that big, heavy anchor of a story structure to weigh him down.

The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
Truth be told, the full 99-minute movie does not entirely hold water; it feels like three or four good episodes connected with plot padding. Aesop probably wasn't too hot at long-form fiction, either.

USA Today
SpongeBob barely rates as OK when compared with "The Incredibles."

Charlotte Observer
Everything about the film seems to have been done on the cheap. The music sounds like it came from a high school band.

Absolutely spectacular relic of before the show went to Krusty Krap. Season 1-5 are better than new SpongeBob!

The rhythmic machinery of a nautical rebellion: A 3.0-star vivid but familiar drift through high-tension slapstick grit.2013(3.0)I watched The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) in 2013, and it remains a vivid 3.0-star record in my archive—a raw revelation of how a sensational undersea comedy can be trapped in a narrative rhythm that feels 100% mechanical and stagnant. This experience **** the fourth wall of the animation genre by infusing SpongeBob’s raw, bbo-jjak optimism and Patrick’s sensational, pathetic wit into a rhythmic journey that turned a perilous quest for King Neptune's crown into a vivid act of storytelling rebellion. The narrative rhythm was far from stagnant in its surreal energy; instead, it offered a sensational acting power show where the raw, high-tension encounter with David Hasselhoff and the hororong transformation in Shell City left me in a state of absolute joy at its visceral soul. While the production leveraged the vivid, sensational Goofy Goober rock anthem and the raw, chewy bond of the protagonists, the overall soul felt stagnant, as the narrative rhythm dragged through a pathetic cycle of predictable obstacles that lacked the high-tension impact of a 5.0-star masterpiece like Anastasia. The 95% preservation of my memory is dominated by the rhythmic, raw beauty of the "I'm a Goofy Goober" sequence and the vivid but pathetic greed of Plankton, creating a journey that felt more like a nostalgic cartoon extension than a permanent, sensational scar on my soul. Unlike the vivid soul of Stoker or the raw brilliance of Tarzan, this encounter possessed a rhythm that was too stagnant and "slapstick-heavy" to achieve a higher rank. It stands in my 2013 record as a powerful 3.0-star testament to the raw power of Hillenburg’s vision—a high-tension encounter with the vivid rhythm of the Krusty Krab that remains a chewy, if familiar, artifact of my cinematic journey.

It's a fine movie, SpongeBob fans will like it enough but even then they will feel at times underwhelmed.

I am a big fan of SpongeBob but I'm very disappointed. The film is way too **** story is way too predictable... and the voice acting is way too cheesy. The TV series is way better than the movie..........
