The Settlers

Una película histórica muy interesante, con escenografías mágicas y un relato crudo y directo. Me encantó.

'Los Colonos' is a Chilean western of impeccable craftsmanship. The beautiful photograph of the immensity of Tierra del Fuego provides a feeling of amazement and desolation, especially when the brutality is present. Felipe Gálvez's film debut impresses with his ambition and a theme as raw as the history of a country based on the genocide of the natives. It is, without a doubt, a cruel but necessary reminder of ethnic cleansing, dispossession, and marginalization in the pursuit of profits and "order." However, anyone could accuse Gálvez of prioritizing style over substance; The characters do not feel as developed, not to mention that the story never manages to closely represent the population under attack (something that, for example, 'Killers of the Flower Moon' does achieve). The violence also becomes gratuitous in several instances, particularly in one that is quite dreadful in a sexual way. In any case, 'Los Colonos' is an exciting and technically superb debut that makes us look with discomfort at how indigenous peoples have been treated on our continent.
