It's a study in deception, and as told by filmmaker Alex Gibney ("Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room"), it's a disturbing and sad one.

The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley offers tidy, compelling, and continued proof of Gibney’s skills in the art of delineation.

I am a huge Alex Gibney fan. Imo he is the most important documentary filmmaker working today (that I know of at least) and I try to see everything he does. Despite that, I have not given all of his films high marks, but this one scores in every way. Gibney is great at looking at the dark side of the American Dreamworld - the egomaniacs, the cracked visionaries, those with an unquenchable lust for power. Blood testing entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes is a perfect subject for him. With her baritone voice, big blue eyes, Steve Jobs black turtlenecks, and self-possessed demeanor, she is an archetypal figure, pursuing her impossible dream to the point of disaster for herself and many others. Despite all the harm she did, she does not come across as completely horrible. I had the feeling that, at the beginning at least, she probably meant well, but got in over her head. She was/is a marketing genius, but she wanted to be a scientific one.

At this point in his career, Gibney can make docs like this in his sleep. It's a solid, stately movie that is largely carried by its bonkers source material.

With a popular subject, and some downright corny visual devices, The Inventor doesn’t knock it out of the park as neatly as some of Gibney’s other works. Still, it’s a worthwhile and damn entertaining addition to the developing Elizabeth Holmes canon that makes up for its flaws with undeniable watchability.

The Inventor becomes less an exposé of white-collar crime than a study in the power of self-delusion and corporate megalomania. Gibney’s methods are simple but often brutally effective.

Alex Gibney’s documentary tells a dramatic, if somewhat workmanlike, story of Silicon Valley hubris meeting old-fashioned scamming.

The fascinating story of Elizabeth Holmes and the Theranos scandal is frustratingly underexplored in Alex Gibney’s disappointing new film.

This was a very engaging documentary. They really captured the fervor of Theranos and the salesmanship of Elizabeth Holmes. I was totally ready to drink the Kool-Aid, as testing is outrageously expensive and I'm not fan of only two companies being in the game. We got to watch as it all fell apart and in the end it asked a lot more questions than it answered. Number one, who was dumb enough to buy that a college drop-out with no degrees knew better how to do advanced medical testing better than doctors and the companies that had set the standards? I'd say Elizabeth Holmes was a conwoman, but I think she really had faith in her ability to deliver. Last I heard, though, she said "I don't know" 600 times in a deposition. She's the Bernie Maddoff of the medical testing industry.
