The familiarity is part of what makes The Dry tick along so nicely; it reminds you of other good movies even as you enjoy its own special flavor.

Watching the film is such an intense experience that most of its flaws fall away and its red herrings serve only to enhance the local color.

The Dry is the kind of movie that not only keeps you fully invested while watching, but also stays with you long after. This is a testament to its solid plot and well-developed characters, with many subtle connections and details that you might miss on a first viewing. Eric Bana and Genevieve O'Reilly deliver excellent performances, clearly invested in the material and sharing a surprisingly convincing on-screen chemistry. It’s a film for viewers who prefer mature, restrained storytelling over flashy action, while still offering strong visual appeal. In an era where modern Hollywood often favors flashy writing, it’s refreshing to see such strong storytelling.

At times, it can feel a bit like “Clue” with so many plausible characters and motives swirling around and around, but Bana keeps it grounded, as a professional trying to do his job the best he can, while caught up in memory and trauma.

Aussie director Robert Connolly (“The Bank”) takes his time with this material, slowly building up characters, layer by layer. The stresses of the drought are stated overtly at first, and slip into the background.

Bana is one of the producers of The Dry, and it’s not hard to see why he wanted to act the role, which is uniquely suited to his specific talents – his potent mixture of brusque physicality and barely bottled emotion. Connolly is a patient enough director to let us take in the pain this man holds in his face and the quiet power in his eyes.

The plot of The Dry, it has to be said, is not a model of elegance and plausibility. I sniffed out the villain, who barely merits the description, a fair way off, and the dénouement, though it involves the threat of fire-starting, is the dampest of squibs. Yet the film has serious staying power.

The particulars of the central mystery are mundane, to the point where the film itself doesn’t spend too much time digging into them.

The Dry is the closest movie this summer to Mare of Eastown. How? For starters, you've got an unsolved murder from years ago that brings back DetectiveEric Bana to his hometown to investigate a tragic murder-suicide that involved one of the original suspects. Once you get past the Australian accents, you can enjoy a well written, yet somber who-done- it play out. Who's hiding long kept secrets? Just like Mare of Eastown there are a couple of red herrings that lead you off the path. Great acting. Great cast. Great ending, this movie is easily one of the best murder mysteries of 2021

Eric Bana (Aaron Falk) Captivates in Tense Aussie Crime Drama, "The Dry," co-written and directed by Robert Connolly ("The Slap," "Balibo," "The Bank"), based on the novel by Jane Harper. Bana plays a policeman in Melbourne, Australia who goes back to his rural hometown of Kiewarra, in the midst of a long, lingering drought, to attend the funeral of childhood friend, Luke, whose wife and son were brutally murdered. Falk stays and works with the Town Sergeant to try and solve the case of the three deaths. Falk also learns to come to terms with his own role in the unsolved death **** from the town that he befriended when he was a teenager, reopening old wounds. The movie offers twists-and-turns, suspense and a few suspects, with an ending that's a complete surprise, especially for those who haven't read the novel.

(Mauro Lanari) Sorrowful, sober, poignant, whispered: once the great cinema and the best art followed these aesthetic principles today instead more and more set aside and despised. It can be mistaken for a dispersive film, while it is the remarked metaphor of the drought that has persisted for almost a year, for a lifetime, since the entire history, the chronic shortage of a saving rather than redemptive water to drink and wash. The version of the masterpiece "Under the Milky Way" is also harmonically desiccated and dried up. So far Australia's most successful thriller, Connolly transforms it into the visionary and survivalist vibe of the landscape and its inhabitants.

This has a slight feel of 'The Tourist' about it as its an Australian mystery film but it's definitely not as good as that show. I didn't feel too much emotional concern for or about the characters, other than the main character perhaps because he's clearly not well regarded when he returns home, which seems a little unfair but for the most part, the characters didn't interest me much. It's somewhat tense and it's sort of ok but not a film I'd actively recommend, no.
