Coupled with the talents of cinematographer Ludovica Isidori and music by Rob Rusli, Ford’s Test Pattern is an engrossing human drama, one that examines the intersections and inequalities between race, gender, and healthcare in a poignant and powerful way.

A heart-rending drama about the indifference of the American medical and judicial system, and let's face it, that's also the indifference you'll find in so many other places around the world. And it's a reality that makes it clear to millions of victims of sexual assault that their experience and suffering will simply not receive justice. It goes without saying how many of these victims do not even attempt to go through the situations experienced by the protagonist of this story. Urgent and necessary. It's no longer even a question of demanding change, but of getting people who usually look the other way to actually pay attention. Excellent directorial debut, and an impressive performance by the lead actress.

Taking the title into consideration, Test Pattern remains clearly focused on the circumstances outside of our control that force adjustments in perspective.

Test Pattern — tiny, sedate yet urgent — is like the tinkling of a warning bell that somehow signals the five-alarm fire of ingrained racism, sexism and the faulty American medical and judicial systems, that rages just outside the door.

Test Pattern achieves a lot with very little: The film’s nonlinear editing and cannily scored silences invite our interpretations, locating in them the entanglements of race and gender. Ford pushes us, if not to definitive answers, then to the right questions.

Ford has made a downbeat, realistic treatment of this subject that doesn’t have a built-in call-to-arms as part of its make-up. That’s implied. Nobody, no couples, should have to go through this.

There are colors that pop throughout film — as if, in a nod to the title, drawn from a TV test pattern — and visually this is what stayed with me, from the yellow of Renesha’s dress, to the aqua benches against the white antiseptic floors of the hospital waiting room

Sexual assault is a subject that carries important implications on multiple fronts, and it deserves serious treatment when committed to film. Unfortunately, writer-director **** Michelle Ford's debut feature leaves much to be desired in its handling of the topic. While the picture's heart may be in the right place -- a look at the often-frustrating handling involved in collecting forensic evidence in a **** case -- its execution of the story often misses the mark. Some issues and events are needlessly stretched out, while others receive short shrift and others still are addressed somewhat flippantly (a genuinely surprising approach in a story like this). I'm certainly not suggesting that the film lacks merit, but it surely could have been constructed more effectively than how it comes across in its current version. Admittedly, this release features some fine performances and intriguing cinematography, but the overall package is uneven, weakening whatever insights the film has to offer. Considerable retooling is necessary to fulfill this offering's potential and to convey the message of a subject that deserves better treatment.

Left-wing propaganda. Please let entertainment be entertainment! You are making people on the left schizophrenic, and those on the right, extremely depressing. I don't care what theories you believe as long as you don't force me to live with them. Look for facts, run away from fantasies.
