You can't look away, not only because the carnage is so masterfully photographed, but because the director sucks you into his bleak, poetic, even sensible vision of cosmic brutality. Not for the faint-hearted!

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance's byzantine plot appears fairly straightforward at first, but slowly, deliberately moves into uncharted waters with the fluid grace of a tiger shark bumping up against a potential meal.

A very well done revenge film. The best thing about this film is that you really don't know who to root for by the end of the film. There really is no clear evil character or good character. The filming is great as well making good use of darkness and shadows when needed.

The brutal aesthetics of inescapable tragedy: A 4.0-star masterpiece of raw vengeance.2012 (4.0)I watched "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" in 2012, and it was a staggering encounter with Park Chan-wook’s "Vengeance Trilogy." The film’s "chewy" tension is derived not from explosive action, but from a dry, relentless silence that feels almost suffocating. Watching the lives of Ryu and Dong-jin collapse into a cycle of "eye for an eye" was both visually sensational and emotionally draining. The 95% preservation of the film's cold, nihilistic tone is what makes it a 4.0-star masterpiece; it doesn't offer easy comfort, only the stark reality of loss. The use of sound—or the profound lack thereof for Ryu—creates an immersive experience that commands absolute focus. While it is a grueling watch, the cinematic craftsmanship and the depth of its tragedy left a deep mark on my archive. It is a haunting exploration of how good intentions can pave a road to a silent, bloody hell, proving that some of the most powerful stories are told through the grit of unspeakable grief.

Savage yet spellbinding.

A revenge tragedy as brutal and Byzantine as "Titus Andronicus," Park Chanwook's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance accomplishes a miraculous feat by being harrowing and humane in equal measure.

When it comes to serving up diabolical horror with bold, sophisticated glee, Park, best known for "Oldboy," is right up there with Dario Argento, Guillermo del Toro and Takashi Miike.

There is so much talent on display in Park Chanwook's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, it is a drag that the film never rises to the level of its director's obvious ability.
10
Slowly degenerates into a gory revenge thriller that is never thrilling, but is often boring and frequently repulsive.

Well directed, well acted, well filmed chaotic greatness. Honestly I wasn't a big fan the first time I watched it because its so damn depressing, but on subsequent viewings it's brilliance was easier to grasp. Definitely underrated. Definitely depressing. Definitely bonkers. Did I mention it was depressing?

Strange feelings. 'Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance' is a film that divides audiences with its intensity and style. Park Chan-wook imposes a striking and bold visual approach, but for me, it doesn’t quite dazzle, despite the careful composition and imagery. The film feels slow and long, demanding patience. At times, I felt as if two hours had passed, only to realize I was barely halfway through. The story unfolds meticulously. While solid, it can feel exhausting due to its pacing. The narrative explores themes of morality, conflicting interests, human struggles, and vengeance. The plot is interesting, but much depends on the viewer’s predisposition. It doesn’t reach the level of being truly memorable or impactful. Where the film succeeds is in conveying drama and empathy, which I assume is the director’s main intention. The performances allow you to feel each emotion and understand the objectives, motivations, and dilemmas of every character. As the story progresses, the viewer is left some space to decide whose side they’re on, subtly clarifying who is “good” and who is “bad.” It doesn’t captivate me. I’m left with near-total indifference. A cold, meticulous film that is enjoyable in moderation. Honestly, it doesn’t give me much hope for the next installment: 'Oldboy'. Spanish: Sensaciones raras.

"Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" is the first installment in what is one of the bloodiest cinematic trilogies ever embarked upon. A stylish blend of surreal imagery intertwined with pitch-black humor, and stomach-turning violence. As a director, Chan-wook Park possesses a remarkable eye for detail and framing, and he is simply unrivaled in his approach to modern Asian filmmaking. The films intricate plot appears fairly straightforward at first, but slowly, deliberately moves into uncharted waters. A deaf mute named Ryu (Shin Ha-kyun) devises a kidnapping plot to pay for a kidney transplant for his dying sister that spins out of control into a bloody cycle of retribution. Ryu's scheme quickly, hideously backfires, making him one of two Mr. Vengeances in the film, both of whom are murderously intent on returning to a former state of grace that is no longer reachable. "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" relies heavily on its elaborate plot, which, when all else is stripped away, is really only a tale of family and the lengths people will go of the depths they will fall to to protect their own. Failing protection, vengeance rules the day and so Park's film descends, with its own stately grace, down the bloodied slope of life into the lowest reaches of humanity. The film is superbly made on all fronts, despite the morality issues and graphic violence. Once it crosses its own internal Rubicon, it becomes downright horrific, never allowing you to wake from a particularly arresting nightmare. Followed by "Oldboy" (2003) and "Lady Vengeance" (2005).

An somehow to subtle piece of horrifying vengeance. It shows the devastating Side of Vengeance ending in the Death of a lot of people. But overall a not very satisfying experience.
