Luckily, the performances and characterizations add heft, and the very Russian vibe of soulful heaviness sets it apart from its American cousins.

The new Russian horror film Sputnik whipsaws between suggested horror and schlock so furiously that it turns inconsistency into a virtue. It’s a creepy chamber drama that morphs regularly into an effects-laden ick-fest. But transformation is in the film’s DNA.

Excellent movie. This is much more than an Alien movie. Keeps you glued with all the suspense and drama.

Despite all the flaws, Sputnik has one chief thing going for it: it holds your attention, from the first (and arguably best) twenty minutes, to the last (and arguably worst) twenty.

But we still get a pretty entertaining thriller out of what’s here, no matter how the finale sets up and how the picture resolves itself.

Abramenko maintains the film’s finite appeal throughout, mostly thanks to a familiar aura and a charismatic lead performance by Oksana Akinshina, a fine surrogate for the tough-as-nails heroine Ellen Ripley.

Oleg Malovichko and Andrei Zolotarev's script neither brings it to life nor quite has us rooting for its destruction.

No amount of tight corridors and shots of CCTV monitors ever make protagonist Tatyana feel in peril: this, far more than derivative monsters and confusing themes, is Sputnik’s fatal error.

this has to be one of the best and most underrated sci-fi / horror movies of the 2000's. the atmosphere, creature design, direction, cinematography, visual effects and don't get me started on the score. international films need to be more appreciated because this was better than most domestic films i've seen, it's almost like LIFE that came out a few years ago with Ryan Reynolds but 10 times better. if anyone hasn't seen this yet, i definitely recommend that you watch it, because this film was just absolutely amazing. ↓ point rating ↓ 8.8 out of 12 = 73% ️ acting - 0.7 ️ cinematography - 0.8 ️ costume design - 0.5 ️ directing - 0.7 ️ film editing - 0.6 ️ makeup & hairstyling - 0.7 ️ music - 0.6 ️ production design - 0.8 ️ score - 1 ️ sound design - 0.8 ️ visual effects - 1 ️ writing - 0.6

Generic? Yes, of course. Its own plot and structure force it to do so. But even so, works fine with what it has. This is a personal comparison, but this movie does better what Venom couldn't and I say that because it has elements that make them similar. Sputnik didn't surprise me, but it has a decent and respectable quality.
