SummaryPersepolis is the poignant story of a young girl in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of the precocious and outspoken 9-year-old Marjane that we see a people's hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power--forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, Marjane outsmarts the "social guardians" and ... Read More

While avoiding specious bromides about universality, Persepolis insists on communicating with its audience, and insists that communication and empathy are the keys to our survival.

Some people don't understand how near-death hallucination scenes in movies work. The story doesn't equate marx with god, Marjane does in a state of delirium (she is essentially still a child at that point in Vienna and holds on to some beliefs from her childhood, like god and communism because - get this - she is still a child then). Ignore the cranks complaining about marx because they don't understand how storytelling works and enjoy a visually stunning and timeless animated movie version of the graphic novels. The storytelling is great, the pacing is mostly great, the art style is used effectively, the dialogue and characters are excellently written. It's worth a watch.

This must be one of the best animated movies of the 2000s. It tells the shocking and heart-breaking story of how war affected psychologically the life of Marjane, the main character. The writing is phenomenal, the animation looks great, and I felt that the story sometimes didn't have a "focus" (I felt it was a little all over the place), but that's not a bad thing, it actually makes the plot pretty unpredictable and I liked that. This is a fantastic movie, it's easily in my top 10 best animated movies of the 2000s decade. As for movies having similar themes and that I've seen so far, this is much better than The Breadwinner.

The A.V. Club
The two main points Persepolis makes are that strife is relative, and all politics are personal.

Village Voice
Persepolis is a small landmark in feature animation. Not because of technical innovation--though it moves fluidly enough, and its drawings have a handcrafted charm forgotten in the era of the cross-promoted-to-saturation CGI-'toon juggernauts--but because it translates a sensitive, introspective, true-to-life, "adult" comic story into moving pictures.

The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
Persepolis is as modern as tomorrow's headlines and as classic as an ancient myth.

Film Threat
The combination of pen, ink and geopolitical strife have yet to yield anything quite like it.

The New Yorker
There is no denying the boldness of Persepolis, both in design and in moral complaint, but there must surely be moments, in Marjane’s life as in ours, that cry out for cross-hatching and the grown-up grayness of doubt.

This movie is complete communist propaganda targeted towards kids, and it coincidentally has an art and animation style uncannily similar to 40's and 50's soviet propaganda cartoons directer towards kids. It is complete **** badly drawn and animated. DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS WATCH THIS, they will probably be brainwashed into thinking Karl Marx is up there with God and think that communism actually works.

This movie **** tries to make you believe Karl **** Marx is God. No kids, communism doesn't actually works, and Karl Marx isn't God. Capitalism can be cruel some times, but i'm **** sure it's better than cummunism, and this soudn't take it as damn garbage.
