Monster Hunter

There are monsters, there are explosions and there is Ron Perlman with beautifully feathered hair. This is a film that is all about spectacle. There is no need to ask questions or wonder about certain aspects of the plot: This is another dimension populated with monsters, that’s all you need to know. Monster Hunter asks you to let every fantastical second wash over you.

Action sequences are choreographed and edited with a degree of tight conceptual and spatial coherency that puts nearly any Marvel movie to shame, whether close-quarters scuffles or epic woman-on-kaiju confrontations.

If you’re already a fan of the game – and want to see Jovovich at her baddie-squashing best, then you’re in for a treat. And a little brainless escapism never hurt the rest of us either.

It's all peak Anderson, which sadly also means his inability to put a story together.

A few flashes of amused chemistry between the two actors represent all the human interest in this unimaginative sci-fi actioner, but that doesn't mean the pic's relentless focus on giant-monster battles won't please the director's fans.

For roughly two-thirds of its running time, the big-screen video game adaptation Monster Hunter feels like an attempt to answer a question no one has asked: What would the “Jurassic Park” movies be like if they were drained of all sense of wonder? The film rallies toward the end with a few genuinely spectacular images, but even its best scenes fail to justify a tedious first hour.

Series fans will feel cheated by such a chintzy and incurious take on something they love, while the rest of us will be left wondering how the source material earned itself any fans in the first place.

Manque de dialogues, de backstory, de monstres et de combats mais au final on passe un bon moment avec de belles iamges, des références aux jeux bien amenées et quelques scènes épiques, une suite à prévoire ?

Well it could have been worse. Paul WS Anderson is still the best Anderson even when he misses the mark and Milla is charming as always.

I knew I wasn't about to watch a masterpiece, but I didn’t expect something this disastrous. Monster Hunter fails on almost every level. As a fan of the video game, the least you want is a well-done nod or an atmosphere that feels familiar. But no. The film is just noise, explosions, monsters that barely convey anything, and characters you don’t care about. Not even Milla Jovovich can save this, and I usually have a soft spot for her physical commitment in this kind of **** script is a collection of scenes that don’t connect, with a storyline that feels like it was scribbled on a napkin. Paul W.S. Anderson’s direction goes all in on non-stop action—but without rhythm, without soul, without emotion. Some of the creatures look interesting, sure, but the whole thing is so boring that it’s hard to stay engaged beyond the first act.I struggle to understand how so much material can be so poorly used. And it’s not a matter of budget or actors—it’s just that there’s not a single good idea behind it. It all feels rushed and lifeless. A film made to meet a quota, not to entertain or pay tribute to anything.I give it a 3/10 because, in spite of everything, Anderson has done better in the past and a couple of scenes are decently shot. But this is a tiring mess. The kind that not even popcorn can save.

Whether it's game enthusiasts or fans of monster genres, after watching this poorly made and low-quality university graduation project, they are likely to feel deeply disappointed and may even question whether Paul W.S. Anderson has ever actually played the game himself.
