A real surprise. It seems to promise an exploitative genre movie, about gangsters and drug deals, and it delivers on that, but it’s something more. Director Catherine Hardwicke and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocet have taken a Mexican thriller, with a female victim at its center, and have turned it into an intelligent feminist film.

The souped-up plot is certainly indigestible (cheesecake, beefcake, bullets — choke on that), and there’s a steady stream of bad laughs, but something genuinely frightening comes through: a woman’s sense of disempowerment by men on all sides of the law. Hardwicke sticks to her guns — meaning there’s no play in the gunplay, only horror.

Το 2011, κάνοντας πρεμιέρα στις Κάννες και συνεχίζοντας στα μεγαλύτερα φεστιβάλ του κόσμου, το Μεξικάνικο Miss Bala είχε συζητηθεί πολύ, αν και πρέπει να ομολογήσω ότι προσωπικά δεν κατάλαβα το γιατί, με τη ταινία βρίθει προβλημάτων και να είναι σχεδόν αφόρητη. Όπως και να ‘χει όμως, είχε μια ενδιαφέρουσα, τουλάχιστον μέχρι ενός σημείου υπόθεση, και όταν ανακοινώθηκε το αμερικάνικο remake, η αντίδρασή μου ήταν αρκετά θετική και γιατί η υψηλότερη ποιότητα παραγωγής θα μπορούσε να λύσει κάποια από τα προβλήματα αλλά και γιατί, μεταξύ μας, χειρότερη δε γίνεται να την κάνουν!
Η Gina Rodriguez είναι μια πολύ καλή επιλογή για το πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο με τους Ismael Cruz Cordova (Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk) και Anthony Mackie (Triple 9) να συμμετέχουν.

Without the unyielding forward charge of the original, however, the far-fetched story doesn’t really work. And the movie’s attempts to explain its characters doesn’t make them any deeper; quite the contrary, it renders them simplistic.

There are times when it’s funny. There are also times when it beats you over the head with context clues. When the action ramps up, the over-the-top music score seems to stomp its foot and say, “Something is hap-pen-ing!” Certain plot points are overemphasized. It veers toward parody. But it’s also satisfying to see the outcome.

The Mexico of this film is merely a place of abject lawlessness, whose hellishness exists only to stoke our fascination for how the protagonist grows as a person by drawing on her inner strength.

Gina Rodriguez's work can be rescued a bit, while the rest is as simplistic and forgettable as the original. Catherine Hardwicke is inside a hole of mediocrity since Lords of Dogtown and she can't get out of it.

The first half of the movie is still watchable even if there's not a lot to see other than the leading lady. The story goes all downhill after that though until it becomes a joke.
