The film’s themes, along with its avalanche of formal signifiers, are all fused together in the magisterial hunting sequence.

The mise-en-scene tends toward a painterly abstraction, as Hitchcock employs powerful masses, blank colors, and studiously unreal, spatially distorted settings. Theme and technique meet on the highest level of film art.

Hitchcock's most liberated and poetic film, Marnie is a masterpiece of psychological mystery that encompasses all of the director's obsessions.

Marnie is merely a marginal work by director Alfred Hitchcock, meaning, naturally, that it's superior to all but the best works of almost every other director ever. [02 Jun 2000]

At once a fascinating study of a sexual relationship and the master's most disappointing film in years.

Marnie is the character study of a thief and a liar, but what makes her tick remains clouded even after a climax reckoned to be shocking but somewhat missing its point.

When an unknown director turns out a suspense melodrama as dreary and unconvincing as this, moviegoers revel in the thought of what it might have been if Hitchcock had done it. It is disconcerting to come away from Mamie feeling precisely the same way.

One of the best stories of a Hitchcock movie I have ever seen. I loved the foreshadowing and intense attention to detail. Such a phenomenal idea and the writing supports it the whole way through. The same Hitchcock slow build as always. This movie's acting was worse than normal. Obviously, old acting is bad, but this movie seemed especially choppy and slow.
