Time
The special effects are marvelous, the good-humored script is comic-bookish without being excessively campy, and there are two excellent performances.

The New Yorker
The movie is a romantic adventure fantasy--colossal, silly, touching, a marvelous Classics Comics movie (and for the whole family).

I know given the slate of newer films we get every year with better and more advanced technology, it’s easy to dismiss older films as fake looking and not worth seeing but I’d argue giving even just one a chance you might find yourself a new favorite film like I did. Thank you Shout Factory for an amazing re-release Blu-ray. Simply put King Kong brings me immense joy as a cinephile and someone who appreciates all the hard work that goes into filmmaking as a whole. Perhaps what I adore even more is that clearly from the get-go this film knows what it set out to do when it was made. While Dino De Laurentiis wasn’t the greatest person around ( Meryl Streep incident) he was ambitious enough to challenge Jaws for the biggest monster flick and wanted to create what the poster says the most exciting motion picture event of all time. For many children of that Christmas of 1976, it was, and I’d argue it still is even with the 05 remake. Instead of being a shot for shot remake of the classic 1933 Kong Dino and company reworked the story to fit into the time period of the 70s. Choosing to do this turns people off who adore the classic but for me it makes it stand out on its own and embraces its newly found story and shows off the technology that was available during the year it was made. Seeing how they combined practical effects with Rick Baker’s suit looks beautiful and at times real except that snake. I love seeing how the mechanical arms interacted with the actors and certain scenes. Jessica Lange is wonderful and even though her character is no Anna Darrow and more of an airhead she’s stunning and gives the film the emotional weight for beauty and beast. Jeff Bridges has never looked better , his hair makes me envious just so luscious. Charles Grodin as the villain was brilliant casting he steals every scene he’s in and gives a dashing turn for the oil tycoon who seeks it all for personal gain. John Barry delivers a beautiful score that makes the emotional scenes hit home. Also, the finale is changed up instead of the empire state building we get the twin towers which look beyond stunning , I give Dino props for doing something different and giving it good reasoning behind it. Overall, I adore King Kong 76, it’s no means a perfect film but for me it set out what to do. Be the biggest blockbuster of its Era. All hail the mighty Kong the eighth wonder of the world.

It is a remake but they have refined and improved every aspect so, in my opinion, much better than the original. It really is beautifully made although some themes and language have dated badly. This is almost certainly my favourite Kong movie. My only big complaint is that they could have taken 20 minutes out, mostly from the boat journey there and back which offered very little interest. Much as I love it there are some silly moments like when Kong finds them in the bar which was way too coincidental and a bit predictable. There are some truly excellent scenes and it all looks amazing, my favourite bit of the whole movie was the subway train. Well worth watching for kaiju lovers.

Faithful in substantial degree not only to the letter but also the spirit of the 1933 classic for RKO, this $22 million-plus version neatly balances superb special effects with solid dramatic credibility.

The results of this technological bonanza are pretty mixed.

The updated King Kong doesn't really believe in itself; it snickers, straightens its face, roars and tramples, snickers again. Behind the bigness lurks a conventionality of spirit. It does have a certain thunderous fun from time to time, but that's not the stuff that dreams are made on. [20 Dec 1976, p.102]

It's a series of big, foolish but entertaining spectacle scenes.

Without a doubt, De Laurentiis' remake of Cooper and Schoedsack's classic is the biggest con job ever pulled on the unsuspecting American public.

Don't listen to the hate, this movie may have poor technology, but does show some love

A sub-par, but watchable remake that's man-in-a-gorilla-suit effect holds up worse than the 1933 stop-motion animation in the original classic. While one wouldn't have much reason to watch this over the original, at the very least this version manages to be well acted, respectful of the original, and entertaining enough on its own.

This two hour movie felt like a four hour movie. There’s not much that was terribly bad about it, but there’s not much that was good either. It was just a slog. It reminds me a lot of the Disney live action remakes. The characters are bland and static. The story doesn’t add anything noteworthy to the original. They set it in the present (1976) but don’t do anything interesting with the time period. The only compliments I have for the movie is that the actors do a fine job and the Kong suit doesn’t look bad.
