There is plenty of material here for a long film, but Moretti keeps things tight and the action is full of surprises. It’s a pleasant comedy.

Is the film cheesy and a tad ridiculous? Certo. But it’s also rather watchable if you accept its mass of coincidences, hopping to multiple destinations (Rome, Oslo, Turino, San Sebastian and Mumbai) like an Alitalia frequent flyer and spanning several decades to tell the tale of two lovers who keep serendipitously crossing paths but can’t seal the deal.

A mostly charming romantic melodrama that, at times, plays like a TV soap with much better production values.

To be fair, predictability isn’t the problem, and the charisma of Trinca and Garrel keeps us rooting for them to be together. But as so often happens in Moretti’s films, he gives a certain degree of individuality to his protagonists and then populates the remaining characters with long-in-the-tooth stereotypes or half-finished personalities.

One can appreciate its willingness to see how love can manifest in strange places, but a satisfying narrative to watch is elusive here.

Like an obligatory offering of tiramisu in many an Italian restaurant, It Will Happen Tonight is a chalky, sugary concoction that tastes nice enough but suffers from staleness.
