After the wearying sameness of so many recent American features, You Can (Not) Redo is as shocking and energizing as the slap a Zen master would administer to a student.

Even without the usual monster mano-a-mano, Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo does not lack for action, offering plenty of animated eye candy in the form of the usual big ships, impossibly futuristic technology and a pleasing, purple-heavy color palette. [23 Jan 2014]

This is the first Rebuild movie to justify the series existence. In the prior movie, Shinji seemed to find happiness in performing a big anime-hero moment. 3.0 undercuts that moment by saying, "It's not that easy." It's also the first Rebuild to slow down and actually explore the emotions of its characters. In the middle section, we get some lovely interactions between Shinji and Korawu (including an exquisitely-animated abstract piano sequence), feeling like the unfulfilled promise of the show's 23rd episode. Terrible action scenes.

As a narrative, “Evangelion 3.0″ may make you feel your brain is turning into goat cheese. As a showcase for pure visual ingenuity and splendor, though, it rocks.
