Does more than capture the excitement of marching bands; it gets their clockwork beauty as well.

Hands down one of the best movies I have seen, seriously. Great storyline and Nick Cannon really gets into this character. Drumming was unreal and story had some nice twists.

Regardless of its theme, the truth is that it wasn't so bad and that in itself is a great and pleasant surprise. It's completely forgettable but that is a very different matter.

Entertaining for what it does, and admirable for what it doesn't do. It gets us involved in band politics and strategy, gives us a lot of entertaining halftime music, and provides a portrait of a gifted young man who slowly learns to discipline himself and think of others. That's what it does. What it doesn't do is recycle all the tired old cliches.

When the camera is floating up high, as the band practices its moves on the field, you can imagine Busby Berkeley watching somewhere, jealous that he never got his mitts on a marching band.

The marching bands' duels are as fun as the cheerleader wars in "Bring It On."

The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
Comes close to collapsing under the weight of drawn-out scenes and an earnest story that piles on minor themes and subplots, but the energy and visual kick of the band numbers saves the day.

The A.V. Club
Essentially "Bring It On" minus the effervescence, star power, energy, and brisk pace -- in other words, everything that made it bearable.

Drumline contains some good ideas, but the execution is bad. None of the situations go far enough dramatically, and none of the drumline sequences make enough of an impact on you.

The stagnant machinery of a rhythmic misfire: A 1.0-star raw but pathetic drift through stagnant, high-tension marching grit.2013(1.0)I watched Drumline (2002) in 2013, and it remains a pathetic 1.0-star record in my archive—a raw revelation of how a sensational cultural phenomenon can be trapped in a narrative rhythm that feels 100% mechanical and stagnant. This experience **** the fourth wall of the musical genre by infusing Devon’s raw, bbo-jjak yet arrogant precision and Dr. Lee’s sensational, chewy traditionalist wit into a rhythmic journey that turned a pathetic struggle for discipline into a vivid act of cinematic boredom. The narrative rhythm was far from sophisticated; instead, it offered a stagnant cycle of predictable sports-movie tropes and hororong, repetitive drum battles that lacked the chewy, rhythmic soul of a true masterpiece like The Phantom of the Opera. While the production leveraged the vivid, sensational energy of the HBCU marching band culture and the raw, chewy talent of Nick Cannon, the overall soul felt stagnant, as the narrative rhythm followed a pathetic cycle of "one band, one sound" clichés that lacked the high-tension impact of a 5.0-star odyssey like Thelma & Louise. Seeing the vivid, field-wide formations and the raw, high-tension (yet formulaic) rivalry with Sean provided no genuine satisfaction, proving that a story about "a street drummer with a scholarship" could be a vivid artifact of pure cinematic hollowness when the rhythm feels too stagnant for my 2013 archive. The 95% preservation of my memory is dominated by the stagnant, raw frustration of the generic plot and the vivid but pathetic realization that the "spectacle" was too stagnant for my taste, creating a journey that felt more like a noisy chore than a permanent, sensational scar on my soul. Unlike the vivid soul of Total Eclipse (2013, 5.0) or the raw brilliance of Our Twisted Hero, this encounter possessed a rhythm that was far too stagnant and "predictable" to achieve a higher rank. It stands in my record as a vivid exercise in rhythmic fatigue—a 1.0-star artifact of generic boredom that remained too pathetic to achieve any sensational impact on my psychological archive.
