Possibly, no sane person could truly explain Dalí — who could account for the painter of Atmospheric Skull Sodomizing a Grand Piano? — but Harron’s film maintains a wry compassion for these mad love birds, who have spent their lives defying convention and perhaps reality itself.

At its base level, Dalíland is all about what a drag it is getting old, especially for a narcissist. But more importantly, it’s also a cautionary tale about the dead-end that is narcissism — not just in life, but in art.

"We want the portrait of the genius of surrealism." Dalì also had his quirks and weaknesses that grew with old age and the biopic focuses more on this twilight aspect, why shouldn't it have done that? Perhaps he would not have liked it, but it corresponds to the description provided by Buñuel in a chapter of his own autobiography. It is not the farce or tragedy of a ridiculous couple but the respectful and respectable tale of an eccentric extravagant artist and his wife in their full humanity. The soundtrack includes "Drag Queen" from Roxy Music's 1st album although Amanda Lear appears on the cover of the 2nd one, '73's "For Your Pleasure".
