Compassionate and original, Crossing is an odd couple road movie about friendship and acceptance of differences that demonstrates rather than preaches its theme.

Akin doesn’t untangle his main character’s inner life; rather, he simply recognizes that healing is a process that both begins with oneself and is aided by those we allow into our lives and hearts.

Akin is here working in a tradition established in Italian Neo-realism — and by the end of the film, he shows he can turn on the viewer’s tear ducts as deftly as De Sica did in his prime — but his narrative approach brings a vivid freshness to the proceedings.

Akin, a Swedish filmmaker whose family originally hails from Georgia, knows this is a story tinged with sadness for lives that have been ostracized and marginalized. But his wider view starts from a place of optimism about what curiosity engenders.

Observed with granular detail and imbued with a pulsing sense of place, this novelistic drama takes time to connect its central triangle but does so with a suppleness and restraint that amplify the emotional rewards of its lovely open-ended conclusion.

Crossing is never less than nobly intent on showing trans people as worthy of dignity, safety, and love.

The searches that don't end as we expect, but that allow us to find something in ourselves when we finally go beyond the border. 'Crossing' is another beautiful film by Levan Akin in which he exalts the healing power of human relationships that are born from improbability. But that is only a part of the story, as the Georgian director returns to the theme of acceptance and **** identity from his latest work to now explore sorority in the trans community and the difficulties they face daily. With memorable characters, genuine emotion, and a fascinating glimpse into the bowels of Istanbul, Akin invites us to redefine prejudices, accept our mistakes, and allow ourselves to love again.
