The film is a mad whirl of influencer phoniness, paranoia, imposter syndrome and parenting nightmares.

Baby Ruby makes a valuable contribution to the emerging cinematic literature on the unspoken realities of women’s lived experience — with style, disarming honesty, and a steady and intelligent hand.

Totally cute intro, can only imagine what is to come soon. Mommy is giving off a disturbing vibe, I'm not sure if it's relevant yet. How excited and terrified mommy appears, feels like her mind is fracturing with her visions or hallucinations. As a father of 3, I totally get her apprehension with being a first time parent. It's so scary and a bit overwhelming at times, our mommy is beyond frustrated and I don't think she understands that her emotions are felt deeply by her baby. Postpartum ****

There’s crafty playfulness to Wohl’s approach, though; dialog can be as killer as Jo’s darkest impulses, and some scenes are drop-dead funny even if they’re about wanting to drop-kick Baby out of your life.

In its empathy-driven terror and ghoulish wit — including the Chekhov’s-gun rule hilariously applied to the placenta — “Baby Ruby” won’t be for everyone, although it only ever feels steeped in the honesty of experience, which, according to the press materials, was partly Wohl’s own.

Evocative and appropriately aggravating as Baby Ruby is in its portrayal of mental breakdown following traumatic childbirth, however, its parlaying of this condition into full-blown genre tensions and terrors yields mixed rewards.

Baby Ruby operates at a high-pitched melodrama-horror level, and the constant frenzy becomes exhausting. The film's nerves become so frayed there's almost no feeling left in them; the terror is monotonous and repetitive.

The film’s depiction of the fear and uncertainty of motherhood gives in to monotony.

As a man I will never be able to weigh in on what motherhood entails, and I say that regardless of what the filmmaker's clearest intention was, which in my opinion is horror and unease, but this also means that from my perspective she goes overboard with it and turns an obviously visceral experience into crude episodes with many hollow scares that exclude the more authentic parts of the experience, and that if they had been blended in a more efficient way we'd be talking about a better movie.
