Moratto’s concise firecracker of a movie is straightforward in its soul-crushing blows and an essential piece of social-realist cinema for our times.

7 Prisoners is an angry film, but Moratto, crucially, reserves his most intense judgment for an inhumane system, not the characters who are trapped by it, each in different ways.

Es una película brasileña muy impactante y deprimente. Dato curioso: esta película tiene 4 doblajes en español (latino, mexicano, argentino y español de España).

The tightly wound human drama increases to a boiling point that simmers all the way to the credits.

The rather on-the-nose storytelling grows increasingly complex and interesting the further that the protagonist ventures into morally ambiguous territory.

This impressive feature from Alexandre Moratto takes the topic of modern-day enslavement as a jumping-off point for a morality tale which gets increasingly knotty and satisfying as it goes on.

7 Prisoners gets us caught up in its moral quandary and the hard mathematics of survival, and is just long enough, with enough forks in the road Mateus faces, to put us in his shoes.

If the pay-off aims for the gut and misses, the journey to that point provides a searing microcosm of a corrupt and degrading system.

The film touches on a seemingly unthinkable thing in the modern world, like slavery, but what could be more profitable for the owner of the means of production than free labor. The events in the film take place in the lowest, poor, disenfranchised, uneducated strata of the population, but since the basis in labor relations under capitalism is built on the exploitation of the worker and the alienation of labor results, the situation can be transferred to any working collective engaged in real work, i.e. creating surplus value. So office workers are constantly faced with a situation of overtime, a tight schedule, an extremely scheduled plan, where creativity and quality have already been sacrificed, and the goal is also to maximize profits. Everyone suffers from the system, the contradiction of the interests of the owner of the means of production and the workers leads to an imminent crisis, or even the collapse of the system itself for the better, or what is more likely with spontaneity, disorganization of workers for the worse. The film does not leave anyone indifferent, it shows the motivation of people well, where everyone can be understood, but is it possible to forgive?

A haunting, well-made film that takes the viewer into the depths of human behavior. It not only addresses the abhorrent practices of human traffickers and slave owners, but also, and most importantly, the strategies the victims devise to escape this hell. One of these is to come to terms with the perpetrator and seemingly play along with his game. The film clearly demonstrates that the boundaries between victimization and becoming a perpetrator are fluid. Anyone who ties themselves to the devil becomes one themselves.

In fact, none of us are free. Only some of us are more prisoner. So is this a requirement?

7 Prisoners isn't a film that offers enough variation to be perceived as a more proactive film, but its story of modern slavery is a stark account and reminder **** and painful reality that millions of people face with the promise of a better life. The fragility of the soul and your will are among the main themes of this film, and how it ends up affecting one of its main characters, in a passage that shows the rottenness of his captors and the corruption that allows this situation to thrive so openly until it closes with the inevitable blow of countless lives ruined. This is not a subtle film, nor does it need to be, and even with its drawbacks and flaws, it's considerably tragic and pertinent.

I don't know. This is not a terrible film, but I think it's not that far from being misery porn. I liked it better 'The White Tiger' —Ramin Bahrani, the director of that one, produced '7 Prisoners.' Both were taken by Netflix, but the approach is very different. While 'The White Tiger' tackles corruption and social hierarchy through satire, '7 Prisoners' takes itself very seriously. 'The White Tiger' is not perfect, but its tone is highly engaging. The drama around '7 Prisoners' is mortifying and somber, but sometimes is solely based on the suffering of the victims, and not that much on the protagonist's struggle, whose moral dilemma is not fully explored.
