It’s been a while since I’ve played a game that fostered such gentle intimacy between characters – and there’s cooperative multiplayer, too, if you fancy recruiting real-life friends as fellow adventurers.

Indie RPG Wildermyth aims to combine the best of storytelling with the best of procedural generation and succeeds, thanks to great writing, solid tactics, and some very clever design decisions.

Wildermyth is a 1 of 1 game. Not quite a rogue-like, not really a CRPG, but a wholly great and unique experience. The game will have you moving through campaigns with randomly generated heroes that tackle procedurally generated events while an overarching story takes place. Campaigns take narrative decades to complete and your heroes may retire, be maimed, or completely killed by the time the threat is completely dealt with. Upon completion, some of your characters will be written into the annals of history as legendary heroes akin to King Arthur and Joan of Arc. In future campaigns you can call these heroes into your party where they will start with some of their power and act as the grizzled vets of the party. The overworld map involves elements of time management board games like Pandemic. The enemy is pushing back at certain intervals. For example, when building a town you can do it quickly to save time, or take longer and scavenge for items. Taking too long could lead to “Calamities” (permanent enemy buffs) or “Incursions” which the enemies will actually move about the map pillaging until dealt with or they are whittled down by the townsfolk. On most difficulties you can manage this without the crippling anxiety and analysis paralysis these systems usually give - but if you want everything to be do-or-die then the customization is there for you (there is even a “no reload” mode). The combat is your standard grid-based fantasy fare. Warriors have armor and can taunt enemies, Rangers can move in and out of stealth and the Mages, peculiarly enough, can only cast magic by interfusing with terrain. Using plants to root enemies or stone pillars to shoot out a ricocheting rock is a fun twist on the standard spell slinging. Less is more with the class system in Wildermyth. It only features those three classes, but they *work*. Each class feels overpowered but you never feel unkillable as a party. The game features a great action economy as well, with many tactical abilities only costing your “swift action” and not negating your ability to attack and move. Too many games I find myself asking “why would I try to stun when I can just kill it?” However this rarely comes up in Wildermyth. In between combats you’ll chart the map revealing new “tiles” and getting a procedural event. Some can be benign, but others can have long lasting consequences. For example you may happen upon a flame that calls out to you; choosing to touch the flame will start a process of you slowly losing your limbs to becoming a fire elemental. Who needs swords when you can shoot fire! Your characters can also fall in love, causing retaliating strikes against a monster that hurt your loved one to do more damage. Friendships also provide block buffs when you stand next to each other in combat. Again, these are things decided in the road during the events of the game. There are 5 enemy types each with their own flavor. Cultists, bugs, biomechanics. It’s all there. I can guarantee you will find a monster in each type that you’ll grow to hate. The music is well done featuring a very depressing Cello-fronted orchestra. The music actually got re-released with live recordings versus the original MIDI tracks, thanks to a successful kickstarter. However, there is no voice acting which can be expected from a budget of this type of game. This wouldn’t be too much of an issue, but the dialogue is overly human and sometimes can be troublesome to follow unless you’re hyper focused on reading. Be prepared to read through a lot of “Huh - oh, yeah…..about that. I-I-it’s just, well…I don’t know.” Which I believe translates well to voice acting but is a little much when you’re trying to get through a cutscene before a fight. What really makes this game so special about how it’s bigger than itself. Going through your compendium of legendary heroes and reading the synopses of all their adventures (each party has its own name to refer to) is just a heartwarming experience. You feel like you’re truly creating your own book.

No game has ever gotten me so emotionally attached to randomly generated characters. It also evokes such amazing feelings of adventure, that I've only previously felt while playing pen and paper RPGs with my friends.

Wildermyth is an exemplary achievement of how to integrate story and gameplay, each enhancing the other and backed by an attractive, storybook art style and stirring soundtrack. I hope to god there are more campaigns coming from the developers in the future because though there’s quite a few in there already, I don’t think I’ll be satiated on Wildermyth for a long time. After all, you never really want the best stories to end.

Wildermyth is a fun storytelling game with a ton of possible variance between playthroughs. The stories you make with the game can be very interesting, though it has a tendency to repeat itself a little too frequently.

A beautifully styled roleplay experience that takes the best of both tabletop and computer gaming worlds. Heroes age, time goes on, but there are always monsters to be slain. Join the fun.

Wildermyth doesn’t just tell you a single story. Instead, it weaves together many narrative strands to form a procedurally generated adventure for your characters. The tales it tells are superb and underpinned by an excellent combat system.

The developers chose an unusual path, but the product of their labor is neither roguelike nor a full-blown RPG. The game’s original concept is running idle.

This is far away from my usual type of game, preferring Simulation and Management games. I saw it on Steam and thought i'd give it a chance. I haven't stopped playing since purchase. Music: Non-Invasive, adds to the atmosphere of the game and gets intense or mellows at the right parts. I'm working from home at the minute and have played this during quiet times, however have just left the game running when things pick up and had the music playing in the background and it didn't get annoying. Graphics: Simple, customisable characters, reminicent of Fall Out in someways. All the skintones you need to really put yourself into the game and with Workshop access, the skys the limit. The characters are endearing, the worlds solid and the foes interesting but not grotesque. Story/Writing: At times snarky, at others emotional, overall you can tell the writing team (or person initially) has put effort into their work and curated it to be "just right". The game is dialogue heavy at times, however combined with the gaphics and the engaging stories and the multiple-choice outcomes, it doesn't feel like a slog. Overall: If you like TTRPG's, if you enjoy a more gentle approach to your gameplay but with exciting elements (akin to ****, but more action heavy), if you enjoy (customisable) storydriven gameplay...heck if you played Neopets way back when and were obsessed with KeyQuest, you will enjoy this game. Just under £20 on Steam at the moment, not heavy on storage (2GB atm, developers are planning DLC in future), well worth the price for the amount of fun and engagement you'll be getting from this game.

Wildermyth is a tactical role-player in which the characters and events are procedurally generated each time you start a new game. The combat is solid enough, and the procedural system works pretty well to allow players to develop their characters and relationships as they see fit, but without any scripted story beats it starts to feel a little repetitive before you reach the end game.

Pretty fun story generator with solid turn based combat and a lot of different ways for your character's stories to branch out and change. Overall it never feels anything other random and procedural, it doesn't compare to a more deliberately written RPG, but it isn't trying to do that either. It knows what it is and offers so much content that it'll be a fair while before you start double-dipping character events, and you'll be seeing new ones for a long time. Overall a fun game with a cool concept but not engaging over long periods of time.

Overwhelmingly simple. The combat lacks depth, the procedural 'stories' are just a few shallow comic strips, and the campaign loop of scout-fight-repeat gets boring very fast. If you're looking for a tactical RPG with real narrative substance and crunchy combat, this is a waste of time.

It's fun for like the first eight hours, afterwards it's monotonous and repetitive. A lot of scum saving to really make it through as well. Ironman mode is painful. Not sure where all the love for this game is coming from.
