A boring, dumb, predictable game. You can’t find worse qualities in a game that’s all about choices and consequences.

It's frustrating to see Telltale simultaneously at its best, and also just repeating itself. [Sept 2017, p.81]

An exciting adventure with interesting characters, but the recipe has been used to death at this point.

“You say tomato, I say tomuerto.” The Walking Dead enters it’s third season and the cracks are starting to show. While substituting found-family for actual blood relatives is technically a shift in stakes, the same themes and character dynamics bubble to the surface. Themes of abuse, of family and loyalty, of forgiveness - all have been explored in previous seasons - arguably to greater effect - and make A New Frontier feel like a retread. I still like the cast of characters for the most part. Having Clem around does help alleviate some of the strain from “The Brothers” story-arc which feels a bit cartoonish in it’s coincidental meet-up, self-importance, and eye-rolling love triangle dynamic. Mechanically, combat sections have been simplified. You no longer need to aim at a zombie, instead just pressing the prompt that appears on screen. This is s a largely inconsequential change but also an unnecessary one. Gun to my head, I would argue it worsened the experience by simplifying one of the few instances of player interaction. A New Frontier is also the most bombastic and action focused of Telltale’s Walking Dead entries so far. The quiet dread and moments of introspection are traded in for scenes where the cast mows down armies of man and muerto alike. Between repeated story elements and a traded focus on action over character, this series is starting to fray at the seams. I’m now worried Telltale won’t stick the landing with their final season, and who knows what Michone is going to offer. An “Uh-oh we are still falling” 6 out of 10.

Given where Episode 2 leaves us, I am truly looking forward to see where A New Frontier goes. Javier is a charming character with a deep backstory, and they way his family is introduced throughout the past and present leads to an immediate investment in his future. Add in some shady actions on Clementine’s part, as well as the overwhelming desire to keep her around, and I feel that TWD is back on the right track. Telltale continues to impress.

Maybe we can expect wonders from the third season of Walking Dead. The first two episodes have great characters and a very impressive plot.

liked the game. It's a pity that Clementine was a minor character. This part is slightly worse than 2, but still worth it.

Strong characters, thrilling story, but I expected more from the final episode. […] It’s obvious that your previous decisions have no real effect and especially the most emotional storyline lacks a satisfying conclusion.

Whilst A New Frontier doesn’t do anything differently with the gameplay, the story has always been The Walking Dead’s strength and, in this area at least, season three may provide the reversal of fortune that Telltale need.

The Walking Dead A New Frontier has a story worth telling at the heart of it, and Telltale eventually gets there, but the narrative stumbles at almost every turn. Repetitive gameplay, technical glitches, and the constant overshadowing of one character by another significantly blunt the set-up of the season’s cutting finale. The journey must continue in the inevitable fourth season, but I hope Telltale devises a better game plan for when that time comes.

I remember the first time I played Season 1, I really like it and it became one of my favorite games. I like how telltale lets you make choices and choose dialogues. That makes the game personal. While I really like Clem, unfortunately it wasn't fun playing as her in season 2 cuz she was just a kid and there's not much she could do.
This season however you play as Javier who actually is strong enough and can do a lot. He can fight big enemies & has a huge impact in story. I really liked his character and the choices I made and how story turned out at the end was very satisfying for me. I don't have have any complaints about the game other than how I couldn't save some characters that I liked. Their death seemed unnecessary. Finally the music was great as always. I love Jarred-Emerson Johnson's work.
