Trails Through Daybreak both refines and expands the series’ formula to produce one of the years best JRPG’s, providing a sorely needed entry point after concluding the Crossbell/Cold Steel heptalogy.
93
Trails through Daybreak sets a new paradigm for the franchise with a versatile combat system combined with an endearing cast of new characters and a story that grows with each new chapter.

An exciting fresh start for the RPG series. With strong character writing and excellent worldbuilding, it’s newcomer-friendly while appealing to fans. [Issue#43, p.96]

A little disappointed, and this has been my experience with this series for several years now. The graphics still look more like they belong in 2010 than in 2024, when it was released here. The antagonists are very stereotypical, some even quite tiresome and grating with their villainous performances. The story, which seemed like it was going in a different direction, ends up being the same old thing, with a structure very similar to the other games in the series. Falcom needs to wake up because they're falling far behind in everything, and it's causing me to lose interest in the series.

I like this game. After not so great 3, 4 and reverie it felt like breath of fresh air. I like new combat, while nothing spectacular graphics are quite nice and story returns to the style of Sky games and Zero/Azure, being less about fate of the world and more about actual caracters in it. Yes there is still a pertty big crisis during the climax of the story, but nothing like a WORLD WAR and THE END OF THE WORLD. I also liked characters in general, Van is not perfect, but he has his charm and potential to be a great character in future games. I only wish they abbandoned this annoying persona-like hangouts mechanic, it just robs you of some character moments for no real reason.

In my opinion the worst entry in the The legends od heroes entry until now. The game does very little to stand out.

Though I will always have a soft spot for the Cold Steel games, Trails Through Daybreak arrives as the new best game of the series. Between giving a more mature protagonist and redefining the combat, the Calvard arc starts with its best foot forward. The fact that things have already become this hectic with the very first game means we're looking at probably the craziest arc to date. Sadly, these take a bit of time to localize, and we'll be two behind in September, but I will be right there when the next one hits.

Whether this is your first step into Trails, or you’ve been with it for over a decade, Daybreak is a definitive RPG experience that can proudly stand with the best.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak isn't just a great JRPG, but it's also a great jumping in point for anyone wanting to dive into Trails for the first time. Despite some initial complexities and some uneven pacing, Trails Through Daybreak is engrossing from start to finish, and has me keen to see what else this storied franchise has to offer.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak is a great start to a brand new arc with its elements ranging from expected to impressively fresh and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Trails Through Daybreak is a very good entry point in the Legend of Heroes series with new characters, a new story arc and some interesting tweaks to the iconic battle system of the series. As good as it may be, it feels outdated: the series needs to jump to the current generation as soon as possible.

Trails through Daybreak has the best side quests in any game I’ve played. I mean, I cried like, three different times. And these are just optional moments, too. The sheer storytelling and world-building alone makes this game worth a look. Overall, this is a great foundation for the next era of this series.

I came away from Trails Through Daybreak with many unanswered questions and mysterious hints dropped in the game's last moments. Despite my issues with some of the characters, Almata, and the underlying Xipha system, I still enjoyed my time at Calvard, seeing old friends and meeting new ones, and I am eager to return. The Trails series is one of my favorite long-form fictional works, and I look forward to the months and years' worth of discussions and seeing how all the new teases and hints end up paying off in Daybreak II, Kai no Kiseki, and beyond.

While the game improves from the previous arc of the series, however the biggest problem I had with the game is the main character. Van is downright unlikeable, he is mean, selfish, does not care about his allies and never has a soft side. I don't like him at all because he tends to be ruthless and I can't accept that and I don't like the darker tone at all. However, the cast is likeable and are very good and the gameplay is solid. Overall, while the game is good and can be recommended to series fans and newcomers, the darker tone and the main character being very unlikeable and ruthless sours me.

Worst game in the series. The combat system is literally poor and non-tactical. The scenario has a ton of inconsistency. Everyone knows everyone and everyone is friends with everyone even if they have never taken part in the event or are on opposite sides. The main characters are barely worked on. All the mini games have disappeared. The game also has a lot of visual bugs. The translation was once again censored. Even the music is well below what the series was able to offer. The dungeons are extremely poor . Only positive point is that the npc not being part of the scenario was a little more worked on but even the themes covered are ultimately boring. No epic moment either. The dead who come back to life once again. In short, a sloppy game which disappointed me enormously as I was a fan of the series and especially after the monument that was Cold Steel.

The dialogue in this game is terrible. They are long, poorly written, silly and don't say much relevant to the (non-existent) story. Maybe they mean something to people who think it's normal to ask about which pronoun to use in everyday life.
