Multiplayer arcade-style games don't get much more fun than Super Treasure Arena. Its pixel-perfect charm is just the icing on the cake.

Unforgivable lack of exploding barrels aside, Super Treasure Arena is a fun little multiplayer game. While the lack of actual online play (on the Switch, anyway), game modes, and levels is a definite problem, Arena counters its shortcomings quite a bit simply by being cheaply priced. For a quick old-school multiplayer fix, it’s a safe bet.

Super Treasure Arena has all the elements of a great arena shooter: fast and tight gameplay, intuitive controls, and clear objectives and challenges. To make this a worthwhile download though, it absolutely needs to be an online experience. It works locally because of how solid the overall experience is, but that should be a secondary option, not the primary way to play.

Super Treasure Arena is a very simple and minimalistic retro-styled action game with strategy elements. While at its core the game offers some fun, especially if played with friends (though without a dedicated multiplayer), it quickly becomes too repetitive and the lack of goals becomes impossible to ignore, not to mention the slightly unsuitable control scheme.
