Is it on par with FIFA’s production values? Of course not: it’s an indie-made, retro-tinged soccer game. But simply by making soccer feel fun and fast-moving, Super Arcade Football is a worthy entry into the Switch’s crowded soccer field.

Given its simplicity and natural charm, it is really hard to dislike Super Arcade Football, and the longer you play, the more compulsive it becomes.

While Super Arcade Football puts you into the action instantly, it would have been nice if it would have shown me the ropes before expecting me to win my first match. The retro look and simple controls make picking up and playing with friends who haven't played before easy and welcoming. For a short, fun party game without much on the line, you can't go wrong. But for the single-player experience, while not terrible by any means, it wears out its welcome long before you actually finish it.

With fast-paced, albeit very simple gameplay and a lovely looking visual environment, Super Arcade Football is much more suited for a multiplayer experience as its artificial intelligence is rather lacklustre and will leave solo players a bit underwhelmed with what's at hand.

It all feels a little muted – despite a range of weather conditions – and we never felt that it ever went all out in terms of throwing oddball stuff your way, like the superlative Golf Story did.
