Story of a Gladiator
Story of a Gladiator is an action beat'em up from Brain Seal Entertainment that puts the player in the boots of a gladiator that has lost everything. While the title "Story of a Gladiator" may be a misnomer as the actual story is short, with no real impact on much of what you do, Story of a Gladiator manages to pull off a fun action title that will keep players invested for several hours as they bash, slice, and skewer their way to the top.
There's not much actual story in Story of a Gladiator, but it's probably the most fun I've had on my PS4 in the past year. Equal parts fun and painfully hard, Brain Seal Ltd have created a compelling and hopelessly addictive 2D brawler, survival hybrid. Are you not entertained? How could you possibly not be?
All in all, you can cleave your way through Story of a Gladiator in just a handful of hours, but it's reasonably rewarding while it lasts. Enter the arena with tempered expectations, and you'll find a basic but moreish brawler.

This game is as casual of a button masher as it gets. On top its VERY grind heavy and the hitboxes are sometimes pretty bad. I still have to say that I have had a lot of fun with this game. It has something addicting to it. Sadly this version is way worse and has way less features then the ones you get for PC. I m actually a little bit sad about that. The game itself runs fine on my PS4 Pro with SSD. Loading times are in the seconds which is appropriate for how thin this game is. You basically battle in arenas against various types of enemies that get stronger and get additional mechanics on them you have to tackle. The basic loop is run and strike or block and strike. While fighting you level up gear and gain levels you can stick onto skills. Some skills vastly improve your ability to progress, some seem pretty useless at all. At later stages you can buy animals and pray to the gods for one-time combat boosts. Whats a little bit sad is the lackluster gameplay combined with the grind heavy basis and really stupid AI. I basically grinded to max weapon and then swept the game. Some arenas need the right skill or bonus equipment, some need the right gods prayer. Armor and shield is in my opinion not too necessary. Another let down is, that you can buy additional boosts for the arena such as heal or one-time meals. Its a nice addition but you have to buy it over and over which adds to the brainless mode you are on in this game. I enjoyed this game, even brought myself to 100% it although you will probably be at around 80-90% anyways when you are done with the story fights. The final boss fight can be a bit harder but is cheesable if you know how. After all this game can be cool if you want something casual with some gore ontop making some hours go buy for a few bucks. I would advise to buy it at a decent sale though.

An otherwise robust combat system is summarily undone by dunderheaded AI, repetitive grinding, a lack of modes and uneven presentation. We've wanted to return to Ancient Rome for years now on PS4, but not like this.
