An enjoyable, albeit short, entry into the skateboarding game genre. The controls at the time of release felt fresh, giving the player control of both feet. Perhaps eclipsed by Session: Skate Sim, which felt more fleshed out and more like a complete game, I must give credit to where credit’s due. Skater XL ramped up momentum for a beloved but defunct game genre, and had some original ideas. I got the platinum trophy without too much effort, and would recommend the game to casual gamers and real life skaters alike. I hope a second one comes out with slightly more realistic gravity and more tricks.

After playing 100 hours I think this game is a very good sandbox skating game for skateboarders. I thoroughly enjoy messing around in this game.

While the core mechanics are very enjoyable (despite the learning curve), the lack of content on console is extremely frustrating. I'm okay with the sandbox-style approach & no story or missions, but the lack of maps & places to skate is inexcusable. Sadly the devs don't really communicate with the player base on future updates, so we can't know what the future holds, but I'm not holding my breath.

Its an ok game I'm not going to tell you to go buy it but also not going to tell you not to buy it. If you played any of the skate series its kinda similar controls as that but its a bit more rough around the edges.

Absolute garbage, I wrote a longer review but metacritic is trash as well and it didn’t post, don’t buy this pathetic excuse for a “skateboarding simulation” EA’s game from 2007 is somehow still better than this disappointing travesty.

At the end of the day there's just nothing here. No reason or incentive to keep playing. The game seems all but abandoned by devs. Tight controls and a sim type gameplay feel remind you of Skate 3, but at least that game gave you a reason to keep playing. I can't recommend buying this.
Update: They have the nerve to add a store with goods purchased with real world $$ to this incomplete garbage. The frame rates now also dip to single digits mid trick rendering this game virtually unplayable at times. AVOID

Taking many of the reviews I have read for this game into consideration I think that one thing a lot of people do not seem to understand about Skater Xl is that it is a niche game intended to satisfy the desires of one demographic - end game EA Skate 3 players. There are no NPC's , there are no stories , there are no missions or goals or events or points or anything ( aside from completing the trick list and a few trophies ). The controls are much more difficult than other skate games but allow a level of trick customization that is unparalleled by other game ( i haven't played Session so I cant compare ). As a HUGE fan of skating games and an avid end game player of Skate 3 I was extremely excited for this - and for the most part was happy with what I got. It took a while to adjust to the control scheme - which could benefit hugely from the stats sliders that are available on PC - as some of the movement can be a little floaty and slow , so being able to tweak it ever so much would be really really cool as well as adding another entire dimension of customization to your character. Like I said this is a niche game - if you loved THPS then this game is probably going to be both too difficult and too devoid of content for you - but if like me you continued playing Skate 3 in hardcore mode for years after EA dropped all support for it online then this is your holy grail - your oasis in the desert - the whip cream on your pumpkin pie. Even if you were hardcore into hardcore mode you are gonna struggle here - these controls are awesome but you sometimes find yourself doing up to 8 things to make a single trick happen - but you know what - that's how skateboarding really is - the hard stuff is really really hard and most people can't even come close ... so in a way I think it would almost be safe to call Skater XL more of a skateboarding sim than a skateboarding video game .. the only 'game' here is the fun a skate gamer will have landing insanely hard tricks and trying to make them look as cool and as real as possible , the saving the clip to edit into a video later. If that doesn't get you stoked then you will likely be way better off with the THPS 1 and 2 remakes. I love Skater XL and am stoked on how the devs keep updating and upgrading the game - trying out new things like a multiplayer mode and an object dropper that allows players to customize their game a bit. If they come out with a full on park editor for this game you will never see me again .. as long as it's good. The game frequently releases new levels and add-ons from the modding community as well , there are twice as many community parks available than in-game ones and they are easily the best ones you can play. I look forward to this game continuing to grow and am excited to see what the community comes up with next. I even tried to buy a PC setup so I could build mod parks for this but yeah - 2021 cancelled that whole plan. Final word - awesome game for everyone who is waiting for Skate 4 to drop and who knows - if Skater XL releases the stats slider and continues with the content it may every well be that other franchises main competition in the marketplace...

For skateboarders its a must buy in my opinion. But it has a very small amount of content and it glitches sometimes for no reason (-2p). It only has a few maps and trick challenges for each map. However Skater XL really reflects what i love in Skateboarding. Its super fun to try new tricks and cruise around, without spaming some buttons. In Addition the game also gives you the freedom to do tricks like you want them to look. For example siccors, front foot catches or back foot catches, pivots and so on.

my only hope is that someone from EA reads these reviews and realizes how badly we need Skate 4. that people should be forced to play this game on next gen consoles after playing Skate 2-3 is like drinking Schlitz after you've finished all the Glenlivet.

Game itself is actually pretty decent, however there is a MAJOR lack of content for the extortionate price they’re charging. The devs at Easy Day are either the laziest or the most incompetent developers I’ve ever witnessed launching a game. ABSOLUTELY NO contact with any of the community, and they have never kept anyone up to date or in the loop. They just use social media to advertise to the people that have already bought their game. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DO NOT BUY!

I’ve put a lot of hours into this game, and it’s probably my favorite skateboarding game of all time. And I’ve played just about all of them since “Street Skater” on PS1. In fact, I bought a PlayStation just so I could play that game ( I’m a huge skate-nerd). The new THPS remaster is excellent, but after unlocking most of the stuff I wanted, I went right back to Skater XL. It’s just so satisfying. The ability to flick, catch, and tweak tricks any way you want is a huge plus. If you actually skateboard IRL, and are willing to get through the learning curve of the controls, then you’re gonna love this game. The more I play it, the more addicting it becomes. And switch... my god, does the switchstance skating look perfect! Your avatar leans just the right way, and keeps their shoulders a little twisted just like they would IRL. You can tell that real skateboarders had a lot of input in the development of this game. There are some flaws here and there. The grabs could use a little work, the character customization is lacking, and the game can be a little buggy, but that’s all trivial to me. Oh, and having the ability to do impossibles and proper airwalks would be nice. Otherwise, this is the skateboarding game I’ve been waiting my whole life for. If you skate, give it a shot. This game will become your rainy day savior.

I made an account just to rate this game. I am rating this from the perspective of skating for 15 years and playing the previous EA Skate games. I think it is actually a pretty solid effort, and great for someone who has skated in the past. There is no campaign, but the tutorial for tricks teaches you enough to go and learn and practice on your own. The game takes practice, so if you are not into that, it is not for you. The checkpoint system is very good and allows you to continually try lines, hit large rails, and continue to try and perfect whatever you are doing, this is a major plus for me. While EA skate used one joystick to control both feet, this one separates the controls of the feet so each joystick controls one foot, and I think this level of control is good. In the same vein, one of my main criticisms of this game is that the controls for fakie and switch are the exact same as regular and nollie. So the motion to do a nollie flip and switch flip are the same. This is confusing when you are just trying to cruise around and do tricks. Inevitably, an obstacle will be and your way, and if you are skating switch stance, it seems counter-intuitive to do a nollie flip motion for the player to perform a switch flip. If you are using the checkpoint system and know the trick you are trying and are doing it over and over, then this control scheme is fine, at least for me, but seeing as I like to do both, I think we should get the option to invert the controls, so that a switch flip is just the opposite motion of a nollie flip, as opposed to the exact same move.

Better than skate & Better than tony hawks it's true skating I skate in reality this game is the same skateboarding is a hobby not a job plus skating is fun you don't need fame or objectives plus this game has no loading screens no microtransactions no online and it feels polished like a ps1 ps2 game no bugs game crashes or problems it could have had a big world or more maps on launch but it's a 8.5 I definitely recommend this game play it yourself don't pay attention to the scores coz there's too many whiners out there who hate any new concept

HUGE SCAM. DO NOT BUY I created an account just to rate this game. I’ve been a skater all my life and avid skating game enthusiast. This game was released completely incomplete. This is nothing more than a concept and deserves nothing more than $10-15 max. Gameplay is super buggy to the point it is unplayable. It pains me given that I’d love for this to usher in the next generation of skateboarding games, but the devs should be ashamed of themselves for charging $40 for this.

The controls are actually pretty good. But the textures take like 5 seconds to load. The customization is bad. There are no other skaters, no humans, no moving vehicles, nothing. "It feels like the part of the game you play while you wait for the rest to install" fits the game perfectly.

One you get the idea, it becomes a really good Sim. Noviced I said Sim. This is not a game. You learn the trucks through challenges, then once you have a few down, you try to put them all together in free skate mode. That's the challenge. I think everyone is missing the point of this title. I feel, once it's been out for a while it will gain a following, but man, oh, man, they have some serious bugs to fix. Behind that, solid title.

I been skating for around 10 years **** the console version for the ps4 and I like the game, the learning curve makes it so satisfying, Yes, even though there's so little content, I can waste hours realistically skating and perfecting even the simpler lines. But I agree it's not a very good game. It feels VERY rushed, at least on console... the performance is very bad, it stutters a lot, like a LOT; the responsiveness of the controls feels inconsistent as hell, we got next to no setting customisation; there's literally NO sensation of speed; transition and vert are still pretty bad; the menus and overall UI are hot garbage; and don't even get me started on the player model, they are NAUSEATING kjdsfj, clothing looks VERY bad, customisation is VERY limited. Needs a lot o polishing.. again, it doesn't look or feel like a finished product. I think they tried to put in the bare minimum in time to launch, which is just a shame.. When I can ignore all of this it is such a great time, but its takes a while to do so.. If I knew better, I'd have waited a little more to get an updated version where most of these were fixed. Also, not being able to walk off your board is a mild bummer heh..

First things first, This game is not like THPS or SKATE, This game is an actual simulator of skateboarding, Made for skaters BY skaters, It's simply a game that might just not be for everyone, The rating of the game depends on the person who plays it, You can either love it or hate it, And if you hate it it doesn't mean the game is bad, It just means it is not for you, I agree the game needs several updates and that it is not quite finished yet but it is still a pretty solid game. And It also doesn't deserve the hate that it's getting since devs already confirmed future updates to make the game even better.

Although the game is missing some very important features, And lack of customization can be annoying as well, But the studio already confirmed more stuff is gonna release soon and they just needed funding to keep adding into the game which I am really looking forward to.

Not good but not bad. It should be closer to a $10, maybe a $20 game. Lots of glitches, getting stuck on invisible barriers. I guess it’s an ok game to hold you over until THPS or Skate comes out. The controls are good, which is the highlight of the game. There’s really not much else to say good about this game. I regret buying it.

[Warning] This is a long review that explains everything about SkaterXL First things first, I gotta put all the fanboys in their place, Y'all EA fanboy clowns really be looking pathetic review bombing this game while you waited for 10 years for EA to announce any news about Skate 4, But when an indie game comes out and tries to give people what they want yall review bomb it? Just sad and pathetic. ABOUT THE GAME Now starting things off this game came out in July 28th, It's in version 1.0 It is very clear the game is not finished yet, Reason why it came out it's because making a skateboarding game is equally as hard as it is expensive, The studio needed the money in order to keep funding the game, So more updates are likely to come out soon. However the game is still lacking, There are some critical features i consider should've been added with the release, Such as challenges in Goofy stance, Or more game modes such as game of SKATE, Or lacks of customization and character models and textures, However I do think textures and character models should be improved I am not going to judge a game completely by it's graphics and neither should you. The game is still currently being made and some of the features they should add in order for this game to be worth 40 bucks are Multiplayer, Other game modes, More music and soundtracks, More community made maps, More official skateparks, More tricks, Grinds, Transition tricks, Improving Transition skating making it smoother and ramp/bowl skating, Fixing several glitches like unwanted ollies or clipping through the ground, More camera for different types of skating angles, reduce the floating ness (Major problem) And over all improving everything that's already input in the game However this is the most realistic skateboarding game ever made so far, No tricks are programmed into the game meaning no trick will ever be the same (Best feature in the game) and the controls make you feel like you have total control over your board, My score for this game is currently 7.5 but seeing all the fanboys bombing this game just because it's not EA SKATE made me decide to round it up to an 8, This game could be a 8.5 or even 9.5 if they manage to fix all or most glitches and add all features most people want Remember this game was made by SKATERS and for SKATERS, This game may not be for everyone since it doesn't have a story or main objective It is just a chill game to enjoy and kill time and, But for those who do like the game, They absolutely love it and have such an amazing community. Last thing, People want to compare this game so bad to EA skate such as complaining that it doesn't have a story or doesn't Have unrealistic tricks like in SKATE 3, SkaterXL and EA SKATE are not the same, SKATE is more of an arcady game which is fun to mess around with, SkaterXL is a realistic skateboarding simulator, No real objectives rather than skating around and film clips to share with people just like in real life, The game is pretty unique on it's own, This is why this game is mostly for skaters but I still think other people who just want a chill game can enjoy it as well... You should also know many of the negative are just EA SKATE fanboys who don't even own the game themselves and just bomb it, As I said game is still in progress and hopefully new updates come out soon.

I bought it and was very disappointed. I like how the controls are real time but they still made it more difficult then it had to be. Also I found myself falling through things. One aspect I would have changed was the fact that every time you wipe you have to respawn in your original spot. That annoying

Good looking start of skate games, but there a lot fo things to change in future updates: - create your own skatepark - add maps (now its too poor) - there is no aim in this game or career (from the very begining till the professional skateboarder) - add music player to change tracks during gameplay - add life to maps (people, cars, animals etc) So, according that this game is start project you have to work more harder and listen to your players and it will be success.

Claims to be the most realistic Skateboarding game, but has moon physics. The graphics are last gen and it has framerate issues. Camera clips through everything and it feels like a tech demo perfectly suited for an early access reelase. Calling this V1, i don´t know, it feels like beta. On PC with mods it is a complete different game, and the modding community is awesome but on consoles it feels like a scam for what if offers. A game should not relate on community stuff to be enjoyable and make money with it. All in all it feels super off. By the way, they didn´t invent the highly praised controll system, Session had this already in the early Prototypes. So it is more a rushed cheap rip off... 20 Bucks would be a fair price for consoles. On PC it can be awesome due to passionate modders who fix the flaws the game has, but just on PC and not everyone is into modding and mods should not add to a value of the game to make profit with it. So much filmed gameplay with mods that don´t show the reality and developers supporting to **** on other skateboarding games is not good. Would not wonder if they abbandon the game like the skater mobile game. But who knows, maybe it gets better with upcoming updates and it becomes the game that it tries to be. Some people will enjoy it, i can´t. Another thing i noticed is how toxic the community can be, they bunch up to downvote youtube videos that give critic to the game or raiding session streams to trash talk. All in all super silly and childish behavior from some people.

Had to create an account because this game is criminally underrated considering it's an indie game developed by a very small team. Sure there isn't a lot of content right now, but the core of this game is really good. The skating feel great and realistic, it looks good, and it gives me those warm fuzzies I used to get from Skate 3. I think the devs did a great job with the base game and I look forward to seeing what they can add in updates. I still find myself jumping in every night for half an hour or more just trying to find new lines. I'm really enjoying it!

It feels like this was thrown together to fill the gap between the next skate game being made. Wish I'd bought it on hard copy as would of taken it back by now. Playing it feels like stubbing my toe repetitively on the corner of my coffee table. Would feel more like skating if I actually took my coffee table down to my local skatepark and sent it down the deep end of the concrete bowl.

El mejor juego de skate, las físicas y lo real que esta el juego es brutal, el único problema es que tiene muy pocos mapas, pero si meten los mods de pc en consola va a ser una bestialidad este juego y sin duda se llevaría un 10

Yes there are some bugs and Glitches but except that its a very good Skating game. The Conrols are actually difficult so u dont get in your first hour a Tre Flip Lip Slide but thats a huge pro point because you have to learn the controls. There are also a hand full of maps wich are really nice detailed and you can skate every corner but like I said there are only a hand full. Over all its a fantastic Game and a must have for every skateboarder

This game is nowhere near completed. It's extremely buggy, missing many basic features, graphics, animations, and lighting are early PS3 era. UI is slow and unresponsive, you often can't tell if the game is just lagging or about to crash your entire system. The only game mode available is free skate, but it doesn't even let you free skate. If you bail, you are reset to the spawn point, not where you bailed. There are challenges to complete, such as flips and grinds, but only if you skate regular. If you skate goofy you will have to relearn the controls backwards. There's no progression in the game, no reason to continue playing. You can't even skip songs or change the playlist, you have to listen to the same song in the same order every time. The control scheme is the only slight positive about this title, but even it is bugged. You pull down on a stick to ready an ollie and release to pop. But if you move the stick slightly after pulling it down it often releases the ollie and makes you bail, and resets you back to the spawn point. It is supposed to be a skating simulator, but if you come across a set of stairs you cant even get off the board and run up them, you have to morph into a location pin and fly up the stairs. Can't ever remember doing that when I used to skate... Don't buy this game. I honestly feel like I have been scammed.

Imagine playing a Battlefield without multiplayer, with maps that look like post apocalyptic because they do not have any sign of human life and whose campaign is nothing more than the challenge of hitting shots at targets. That's Skater XL for Skate games. Few maps and absolutely empty, lifeless, without goals. The most that this game, with this structure, could reach is to become a lobby for you to walk while participating in a party with friends, but not even that because the game does not have multiplayer. A great idea executed in a mediocre way. Not even 50% of the amount charged.

Terrible game if you're played the skate series.
The entire game feels like a tutorial. It's lifeless and it's like you're stuck in practice mode with nothing to do other than freeskate. You can land on a flat from a vert at any hight. It's unrealistic. no body flips and many flip tricks are missing. No career, no multiplayer, no moving vehicle or people. Very buggy and you often get stuck on a death spawn loop going under the map.

This game feels like it’s still In the beta version, there’s no pedestrians so the game feels really empty. Also there are only 5 maps by the devs and 3 by the community (which I hope will be more in the future) the gameplay is good except for sometimes I hold down to Ollie and it just pops without me doing that and if you don’t hold it down perfectly it will do a sort of shove it 90 so you’ll land horizontally and fall flat. After you do all the challenges and have explored all the maps and mastered the game so to speak there’s nothing to do since there’s no multiplayer, no story and no mods on console for now so when they ad these things this game can be truly amazing but without it it’s not so good. The graphics are honestly way to bad for a game in 2020 so all together it’s a really average game at best

A glitchy mess, with lifeless maps and horrible graphics. The very few maps that they offer get tiring very quickly, The character models look absolutely horrendous and there just is not anywhere near anough content to be worth paying full price right now.

Skater XL is a game for the skaters. If you’re expecting an EA Skate game you’ve got the wrong idea. There are no canned tricks in this game and requires patience to learn. The mechanics of this game were designed with realism in mind and is truly satisfying to master. It is fair to say that this game is lacking content however this is no different to skating the same local skatepark years on out. The fun is in the mechanics and gameplay as it is in real life with learning how to skate. The PS4 version requires a couple bug fixes and additional content would be a welcome addition. The fact that they’re allowing community made maps is class and continuing to work with the community is where this game has the potential to the best skateboarding game on consoles. It’s good to see skateboarding games make a return to the industry!

While some games "gamify" their game with gold stars and rewards for completing objectives, others focus on mastery loops. Mastery loops provide a deeper feeling of reward (think trackmania, nioh, counterstrike, streetfighter). This is a game all about the mastery loop. And the reason you see people with thousands of hours of playtime on steam is because it's an excellent loop. I love this type of game and what it gives back to me. I don't need a gold star to drive me forwards, and i don't need instant gratification. I'm 40 hours in and constantly learning and improving. It's almost a hobby now. This isn't a game for those that don't a shallow experience. This is for those that want to commit to something that gives back (as skater does in spades).

This game focuses on super controllable skate physics and once you get it down it's incredibly **** can time any trick as fast or slow as you want and also modify how it moves depending on the angle you move the joysticks at. Difficulty comes from learning how to do specific tricks on command; however, the tricks that are most difficult in real life come off easily in game. The challenge list for each map is great and gives specific focus on tricks, I think this is where the game shines.
Outside of that free skate is fun but aimless, unless you have specific tricks/lines you come up with it isn't very engaging. Since there are no NPCs or traffic you feel alone as you skate through downtown LA, a weird sensation IMO.
Some customization is available for your skater but options are quite limited.
Could definitely use multiplayer, more customization, some sort of story/challenge structure, and NPCs to make it feel more alive. These additions would take the game to an 8.5 for me. A 9 would be if all lag and small bugs were also completely removed as they occur sometimes.
If you are interested in skateboarding or enjoyed any past skateboarding games, this is worth playing.

Skater XL is mediocre at best, the game has a good control scheme and looks good, but it lacks personality. There not much to do here than just skate around and do tricks, no story, no challenges besides the tricks. The game would really shine if there were other skaters in the maps with you, either A.I or real players, instead it's just bland empty maps by yourself. Maybe later the will add multiplayer, as that is what this game needs, or some kind of single player content. As of now Skater XL is just a glorified beta, that looks and controls good.
It's a 5 for now, but more content will only raise the score.

The mechanics are great, but the rest... It's very underwhelming. I used to skate when I was young until an accident made that pretty much impossible, so I really enjoy the controls, the feeling of doing the tricks (albeit with your fingers and not your feet). The problems, bugs, janky physics, mediocre graphics, and way too short soundtrack aside, is a general lack of... let's call it gameplay aspects. One thing I keep coming back to compare it to is Ubisoft's Steep. Just riding down a mountain by yourself is very similar to skating in Skater XL feels, but Steep had challenges, different sports, whole mountains to explore and ride, multiplayer, competitions, user created content, ... Skater XL has a few good maps, but that's it. It's rare that I fully agree with a major gaming site review, but the IGN review pretty much nails my experience of Skater XL. It feels like an Alpha, a tech demo, but not a "game". Now, purists might take offense at that, and I'm not saying there's no joy in nailing a great line, in mastering tricks and the controls. But the utter lack of everything else - combined with the last-gen graphics and bugs - only gets you so far. The in game "challenges" just show you tutorial videos, and I'm not even sure if they're more than that. Without the PC's modding tools and community and the lack of a content creator akin to Trials or Steep, Skater XL is more proof of concept - a very good concept that I will play for quite some time. But it's not enough to be considered a game - especially at that price point (35 GBP). It's unpolished, lacking content, and in just a few hours of playing I know almost all the songs by heart - there's like eight songs or something? I don't know if Skater XL will expand, new maps, new features, updated graphics, but I don't see how this can be considered a 1.0 version with a AA price point. There's great potential and a great basis with the wonderful mechanics, but there's just a lack of content and polish that is hard to ignore.

Probably the best control scheme for a Skating game that I've played. No, it isn't Tony Hawk but it's fun IMO. When you clear a gap of pull of a complex move you've been working on it's pretty rewarding. The game could be incredibly enhanced by some objections/challenges, more maps and some online functionality so I can sort of sympathize with people who feel like there's not much **** here, but it's not a deal breaker for me. For me this game is a 8. They get that for being innovative and original. If they add content (like stated above) they have a game that is solid gold.

Skateboarding game I've been waiting for. Totally lived up the hype and the weight can't wait for additional content

Skater xl tries to scratch a itch that has been in the gaming universe for the last 10 years, but unfortunately for all the good it tries to do it's just not enough, there's a huge lack of content and besides free roaming there's nothing to do really, the game has some activities but they are just boring and don't go further than a glorified tutorial. The physics are ok being able to just let the board rotate under your feet while you drop from 10 meters high is pretty satisfying but a bit unrealistic. The graphics are nothing to rave about they do their job for the most part but you won't be taking any screen-shots of the environment for their beauty. To conclude the game had a lot of potential but it just didn't deliver, lack of content and sloppy controls are it biggest faults.

I don't understand the hype behind this game. Dubbed the "EA Skate inspiration", this game fails to impress. Is it better than any other skateboarding game? Not by a long shot. Is it worth the $40 price? Absolutely not. The game suffers a lot. Framerate starts to drop from time to time, the maps are small and barren, the controls are a bit finicky and confusing, and the characters/ customization look dull. There's a lot of things that still need to be polished. It really isn't worth its current marked price, and it certainly isn't an enjoyable skateboarding game. (This is not a review that is written to ridicule the devs or creators of the game.)
